Toyota yaris rear wheel bearing replacement cost

Hi,
Took my car (Toyota Yaris 1.2 2008) to a Toyota garage for its MOT, engineer failed it as the rear wheel bearings, on one side, need replacing.
They quoted me £500.
£225 parts + 2.5 hours labour + vat

£500 sounds a bit on the high side, doesn't it to you?
Thanks

Possibly not when you break it down?

£500 = £400 + £100VAT (blame the government for that!)

£400-£225 for parts = £175 left for labour

£175/2.5 = £70/hour labour charge

The current UK average charge out rate for car repair labour = £84.30/hour...

Sounds about right.

The reason the parts cost so much is that the rear wheel bearings cannot be replaced alone. What is replaced is the trailing arm with the bearing fitted in it.

Err sorry  but that is incorrect. (Haynes has a "how to change the bearing" section.. :-)

Bearings can be replaced on their own. BUT the ABS sensor is built into the bearing housing..   hence the price..

Non OEM parts are much cheaper.

I stand corrected. Maybe I shouldn't believe everything I read by Honest John.

I find it does have some good info like the Good/Bad section (It's so nice being able to point people at that when they ask for the millionth time what to look out for when buying one!), but like pretty much everything on the Internet you can't just take everything on there as gospel.

I use sites like them and Parkers as a first stop for any car research I do, followed by specialist forums.

I also like to plug toyodiy.com - It is a fantastic resource when trying to figure out part numbers and approx costs!
