Replacing the media system in '13 Auris

Hey guys!

I felt a desire, to upgrade some features in my 3yo Auris. I've got a '13 Icon edition and I was hoping to install one of the Pioneer's toys in it, replacing the default media system.

Not being a mechanic nor the enthusiast about cars, I went to my local Toyota dealer, asking them, if they could fit one in for me. In the response, I got very simple and straight "No". Asking why, they've said "It's part of the dashboard. Why don't you get a new car instead?".

Now, I would like to hear some voice of reason, from real enthusiasts not the sales people.

So, quickly few questions:

Did anybody replace the system in their car? Do I need to do it on my own, not knowing anything about it? Does it break anything in the car, as "part of the dashboard" disappears?

Thanks in advance.

So presumably you no longer have your 2008 Auris - please update your profile,

Yes, you're right. Sorry.

Profile updated. Didn't think I'd need it if I gave some info in the post.

Even older Auris with a basic stereo is integrated to the car, and features like Auto sound level and the steering controls, will be lost unless suitable adapter cables are fitted. Your car has the multimedia audio with touchscreen, bluetooth, USB etc, why would you want go for all the hassle.

To update from a basic stereo to the one you have, is work itself, even though they are both Toyota. Put another brand is even more involved!

It can be done, but you need a facia plate, adapter cables with the correct connectors. The cables that send the speed and reverse signal and the camera need to be connected. The pin outs need to be matched. Also steering controls. You have to take it to an audio specialist to have the unit fitted.

So long it has been installed well and you are happy, that's what matters.

Some valid points here... I was hoping to get some of the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay goodness...

Some audio systems can have updates - Touch Go 2 plus Nav. Also Carplay is on more recent Toyota's so a later Auris head unit should be a straight fit to your car.

Another Auris owner who is about to install a Pioneer:

I asked him to share any info with you. Perhaps if you contacted him, he could give you pointers. I can give you the pointers to adapter cables that will give you steering wheel controls: http://my.page-flip.co.uk/?userpath=00000013/00012513/00078974/  Go to page 110 in the Autoleads catalogue.

Using Autoleads as the example you will need the following cables and parts:

PC2-17-4 - Toyota to ISO harness adaptor

PC99-209 - Toyota stalk adaptor - it say Avensis but Toyota tend to be consistent among models

PC5-166 - Toyota antenna adaptor

DFP-11-12 or DFPK (with cage) Facia plate.

Connecting other features like reverse camera may need a bit more research.

Cool thanks. It sure sounds like a hassle...

I'll do a little more research, maybe find a garage, which will be whiling to take the "risk" :D

Thanks again!

Rafal,

It is not a hassle when you put your mind to it. When the other owner has finished, he will share his findings and what he has done. This will be next month. Everything is plug and play with the right leads. This make things safer too!

You are doing the right thing researching.

There is a solution out there to add android onto Touch screens not already fitted with Toyota Go(+) navigation ( does not work with later Touch2 ) see:
