Thinking about an Auris...

I like my 08 Avensis but my wife finds it a bit bigger than she feels totally comfortable with and I am thinking about an Auris Automatic 1.6 petrol, around 2012/13

A few simple questions:-

Does the Auris have an EPB-not at all keen on these?

Does it have to have run flat tyres-again not wanted?

Are there any problems with the 1.6 petrol auto models?

thanks keith

Don't buy the last of the old shape Auris automatics, they're fitted with the MMT auto box which is actually a manual box with an automatic clutch...and it's absolutely dreadful (we owned an 11 plate 1.6 Valvematic one).

The new shape Auris has the Multidrive S auto box, which is a CVT box and is much much better.  It's a bit high revving at times, but a pleasure to drive (It's the same/similar box as fitted to the Avensis 1.8 petrol).

It has a conventional handbrake.

No, it doesn't have to have run flat tyres. afaik the oem fitment isn't run flat.

Thanks for info-appreciated.

What year did the MMT boxes finish?

Also are these stop/start technology?

thanks

In the UK, the MMT transmission was used in the first generation (1.6 petrol), which ended production in September/October 2012. The second generation produced from October 2012, and on sale from December 2012 used the CVT.

However in some European countries the second generation continued with the MMT for a while.

As far as I'm aware Stop/Start was only available on the 1.33 manual (first generation) and the 1.33 manual & 1.4D4D manual (second generation).

Make sure you get the new shape (like the white one), not the old shape (like the grey one).

Thanks chaps- So from 2013 I can get the 1.6 petrol CVT auto, conventional handbrake, ordinary (fat) tyres and no stop/start system. What is not to like so I will go for that.

Just driven home a few miles in a newish 1 series beemer with run flats -I could not believe how bad the ride was over roads I normally drive my Avensis on and that I have always thought to be pretty smooth!

Well, the CVT box is not build for an aggressive style of driving. So if you are in a hurry every day, I think you'll hate it.

The cvt in my Avensis was a bit revvy, and got quite annoying on motorway hills etc when the revs rise from 2k to 3k to hold 70mph.  It's fantastic around town tho, and generally performed well on the A-roads too.

The 1.2T is not revvy, rpm's goes up maybe 500-1000, but I cant hear it.

I find it very important, the drive relaxed and with speed pilot engaged, the multidrive can be rather hard on the fuel, if I dont pay attention.
