Thanks Steve and Ant-Rav, I have located the valve and run a computer check, but no errors shows up... When I took the car out today it initially behaved like before, i.e. in second and third gear I get no acceleration at all, like driving an old tractor. But then suddenly something "kicked in" and the turbo felt like before again! I kept driving for an additional 45 minutes and really pushed the car to it's limit (as much as you can push a 2 liter diesel car :-), but I couldn't get the engine/turbo to fail again! Now, when this is good news, I'm still not confident that the problem has dissapeared. Is there something I can do in terms of cleaning the valve or should I wait until it happens again and then reluctantly invest in a new part? The fact that it didn't show up on the computer test, i.e. no error code, is that not a sign that it could just be a temporary thing, something stuck etc? Thanks for your experienced advice.

It could be a problem with turbo itself which my mechanic seems to think is not my problem. the fanes sticking maybe.  Also there is a little trigger type thing that moves up and down and sits at the back of the turbo. This movement is triggered by the sensor valve itself. This can get stuck. That was the case in a friends jeep which had same problem as we are having. In his case this little trigger was stuck. And problem was solved when his mechanic freed this part up. his problem was not the valve itself. As I said in my case the last valve I bought seems to be the best I have had yet. Jeep losses power a lot less often than previously since I fitted it. But still does it. Again it came from a 12 year old car. The same valve is fitted to the corolla and avensis. U cud try a second hand part but u might be buying the same problem. A good mechanic should help u sort problem out. This is my experience with what is otherwise an excellent little jeep. Just  a pain trying to sort out what is actually wrong. I'm thinking its prob the sensor valve but I'm not an expert.

Ok...have exactly the problem Scotto wad originally describing, car is ok until it's put under load (eg a small hill) then it won't go beyond 3500 revs in any gear.

I've renewed the scv valves and the turbo boost valves and still can't overtake a caravan going uphill...any other suggestions?  

I'm 99% sure it's not the turbo as this does kick in (when no load) but at 3800 revs.

okay , I hope this will be my last post on the subject .fitted a new turbo boost valve @ £200 and had the ecu cleared (no faults found) MADE NO F@@@ING DEFENCE

SO .got the air gun and blow the vsv 25860 and intake pressure sensors 89421 out . gave them a over night soak with GT85 (not wd40) .put it back together this morning and it FLYSSSSSsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

like a plane .still have a little buzz there but perhaps its like that never notice it before .here,s hoping I have fix it  .to replace both would have been £350

Hi Jeff, the two sensors you mentioned...where are they?? I've replaced the Scv,the turbo boost, fuel and air filter and cleaned the EGR,  a nice side effect is that the car now hot starts, however as a last throw of the dice before I take it for a long drive of a short cliff I'd like to try what you have...

hi, Dominic,  they are just above the turbo boost the one with the red connector and the one that sits above it  .the stuff I used is GT85  not gt58 my mistake  I have put a pdf on here for you to click on .hope I have done it right

I have ordered some second hand valves just in case my fix comes undone .but I know im in the right area now ...........vsv.pdf   good luck I know how you feel I have a canal by me lol

Thanks Jeff. I think that might just have done it!!!  Keeping my fingers and toes crossed...acceleration in third and fourth is a bit of a novelty!!

I'm really happy for you I know how you feel .as I said it may come back, but at least , we are in the right area .that's why I have ordered the parts just in case £60 is better than £350 ,if anyone is local to me you are welcome to try my parts to see which one you need to put your rav right .....jeff

Dear all,

Another greenhorn here with the same P1251 problem that I've been struggling with for some time now. I've followed this forum for maybe six months now and every once in a while logged in to see if there are any new ideas how to get rid of this problem.

My car has been at the local garage twice. The outcome was that turbo is ok, EGR etc. are ok and everything seemed to be ok except everytime the mechanics managed to get the engine light on and the car into limp mode, the wastegate flap (actuator?) was left open. Once they shut it down by using a vacuum pump, the car was fine. So they diagnosed that it could be this or that and we don't want to change parts just because it could be and so on...which is fair enough and a brave statement from a Toyota specialist.

After this I ordered a brand new Denso VSV valve (based on some postings on this forum I thought to give it a go) and changed it by myself. For two months I was a happy man and almost went to the garage to share my knowledge. Should've known better and luckily I didn't.

The problem is very intermittent. It has gone into limp mode only once since the beginning of May but there is plenty of hesitation when accelerating. Before I splash the cash and take my car to Mr. T, I'd like to try a new VRV valve. I have soaked the existing one with all kinds of liquids and because the problem is still there, why not.

My question is that what are the differences in the VRV valve 25819-27040 (RAV4 part No.) and 25819-27030 or 25819-27050 (Avensis/Previa part No.)? They look almost exactly the same and it's much more easier to find the latter ones from eBay. Can you replace the VRV with a Avensis part and will it work? Today I asked a quote from the local dealer for the RAV4 part and it was 489£ (577€) which is...well, maybe they forgot to mention what else does that include.

So if you replaced the vsv and it was okay for  a time ,it must be in that area again try spraying inside with gt85 the valve with the red connector ,,you say that the egr valve is okay ,i would take this off yourself and have a look ,clean it make sure its not sticking mine was just at the top ,and change fuel filter ,(use gt85 for all lubercation  not wd40). I believe the one with the red connector (I'd say brown-ish) is the VSV valve and that is the one I replaced with a completely new part.

I took the car to a full service in April so the filters and such are quite new. I change the filter twice a year anyway. Here in Finland the gas stations change diesel to winter quality when the temperature starts to drop so it's a normal precaution for me.   

I'll have a look at the EGR when I get back home. I was just wondering do the parts fit from Avensis because I assume the motor and stuff are almost the same?

parts, as far as I know the parts are the same .I would still give the vsv a squirt of gt85  ,I think this valve can get lazy  jeff

Thanks! I will try this but I must say it sounds strange that a vsv that is 2 months old, basically new, needs lubrication. It's possible yeah, but hopefully I will find a permanent solution.

Ur part is new it won't need any lubrication. Think ffej is very lucky to have solved his problem. We have not. I thought other people on here might have had some more info to share on this as to a solution, but not so. Obviously nobody know's what is actually causing it. I do think we are in the right area, turbo and valves etc. Pain not having a definite answer that cure's all.

Hi ant ,mine did go into limp mode ,light come on 3mph up hill  restarted and it was okay,so I had a look at the egr abit black but I did notice that it was sticking at the top end ,put it back on and its been OK   Jeff

mine not going as slow as ur's was jeff. mechanic say's not egr. on motorway today it losses power knock her outta gear and she takes the rev as tho nothin wrong, put er back in gear and no power. then she comes back alright again. once on journey to city and once on return journey. new boost valve is def better than original one. when it messed about - loss all power full stop. pull in and turn off car till it decides to go again. leads me to think i'm in the right area.

My suggestion is the control ring on the variable vane set-up will have carbon build up causing it to stick, strip it and clean it. You could replace the full turbo if you're that way inclined, but it shouldn't be required.

hi, all I can say is ,try to do the cleaning ,serving  fuel filter  and replacing parts  etc yourself, don't trust the garage to do them .They might say this and that are okay ,but not even

looked at it .Avalon do you have a pdf  to download so we can have a look at the parts? ,last week I did help another chap on here to get his rav 4 going right and it was the EGR

Thanks guy's' - will check that out Avalon - mechanic is totally honest decent bloke, once said it's possible vanes could be sticking when turbo is up to speed, and think's I should't replace it.
