His guys, need a heads up, last night arrived at parents and reversed when turning around the car started to judder slightly went to pull forwards up the drive and car won't go in 1St or 2nd gear. It will go in every other gear. Inside the car all looks fine and so does the cables only thing left is the selector that sits on top of the box and gloves straight into the box. However can work out how to remove this. Do I have to split the box to do this?

Thanks

Sorry, can't help with this car, but the last time I had this (with a VW) it was a stiff linkage cable, as you suspect. (Though it could also have been a stretched/misaligned cable.)

You probably know this, so apologies, but one cable does the up/down bit and the other handles the left/right movement from the gearstick. My own car would sometimes refuse to go into anything above second, which could get a bit embarrassing when it happened in heavy traffic.

You'll also have figured that a problem can occur at either end of the linkage - either under the gear lever boot, or down at the gearbox end. Mine was due to a bit of stiffness on a ball-joint at the gearbox end - it cost about an hour's mechanic time to free it up and lubricate. But most people find that the gear lever end is a better place to start looking and adjusting.

How to get the gear lever boot boot off? I'd be surprised if there isn't a YouTube video for this - bearing in mind, obviously, that the yanks will call this car a Corolla.

Good luck!
