Rear seatbelt fully extended, won't retract back in

so a fat person  (about 100kg) was seating at the back, he engaged the seatbelt, after 5 min of normal driving we heard a weird noise (like something broke) and an unwinding noise, ever since the seatbelt is fully out and won't retract.

I removed the rear plastic trim, can see the seatbelt mechanism, nothing seems jammed. I can manually roll the seatbelt back a little bit but it remains loose and wont auto retract.

note that it's a 2008 auris, with almost no use at all of the rear seats/belts.

Seems like the spring inside the belt snapped and winded. Better start looking for a new seatbelt.

I know it isn't. Aren't these things supposed to support a force of 5 tonnes or something (in an impact).

Is this a common thing? Never heard about it..

Will Toyota fix this for free? Im going there tomorrow to make "trouble".

What if this happened in an accident?

There is no requirement for them to so probably not. Not only is your car out of warranty (assuming that you don't have an extended warranty) but it is outwith the timeframe covered by the Sale of Goods Act.

i didn't notice the age of your car

England have more chance of winning the world cup than you have at getting a free repair from toyota.

Unless the car is covered under a warranty there is no compulsion for Toyota to provide a free repair. The same would apply if one of the airbags showed a fault.

Forgetting whether or not the rear seat passenger weighed 100kg, if they were of substantial girth and weren't too careful how they extracted the belt, they may have caused the damage.

Your options would be to either replace the seat belt or get the seat belt repaired by someone such as

how can u be careful? u just pull the darn thing out and buckle it. it broke few minutes after being buckled anyway.

well i've had 30+ year old cars and never ever had a seatbelt mechanism break. if they refuse to fix it im prob posting pics all over facebook, prob tell everyone i know that toyotas are death traps, and sure as hell never buying again.

and i'll either replace with a junkyard part or leave it and not use that seat like ever.

These things don't last forever, and you're out of warranty. Posting on facebook doesn't that.

You may well have had 30+ year old cars, but a 2007 Auris isn't a year old car. Looking at your profile and your first post, you don't seem to know whether you have a 2007 Auris or a 2008 Auris.

You've outlined your intended course of action, so obviously don't need any further comment from Toyota Owners Club members - thread locked accordingly.
