1.6 vvti vs 1.6 valvematic

Hi all, I am new to here but I have been a toyota owner for the past 5 years. I recently changed my Toyota model and I am concerned about the performance of the new vehicle. I used to own a 2005 Corolla saloon 1.6 vvti (109bhp). The car was very powerful and responsive, i even used to overtake on 5th gear. Now the new Toyota I got, a 2013 Auris Excel model 1.6 vmatic engine (132bhp) with around 20k miles (practically new).

Does it make sense that it is less reponsive than the corolla and requires more revs to operate comfortably on higher gears? I am concerned about this. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

thanks.

Probably down to the increased levels of emissions controls on the newer engine.
