Wheel locking Nuts - I'm confused

So my current wheel locking nut key seems to be worn. So I called Toyota and they said I could order the key for £21.60 inc vat or a new set for £25. I thought great I will just order the set and leave the extra nuts but he said you can't do that. The new set would have a different key and a different random 3 digit number. So would have to remove the existing locking nuts and charge £90 to do this as it takes an hour.

I am confused. I have the original box and card. I thought all I need to do is order a new set and then when it comes to remove the nuts use the new key and replace the nuts if needed from the new set,

PZ4AK-EV906-00 and code in the white card is 492.

So whats the best thing to do?

Probably much cheaper to get a nut splitter and take of the old locking wheel nuts and fit the new set your self.

Not sure if it was Halfords or eBay, that do the nut splitterit was less than 20 quid.

I would try another dealer, in caseit is just an attempt to make more money out of you.

I can go to a local tyre guy and get them removed. It doesn't make sense if they can supply me a key for £21.60 but not the nuts to go with the key. The nuts themselves are fine its just the key thats become chewed.

I have been on eBay but I am not confident that I will order the correct part.

just quote the number 492 and purchase a new locking wheel nut key then your sorted.

why purchase a complete set of locking wheel nuts when you only require the key to undo them.

Time to bite the bullet and do away with your locking wheel nuts, they're more bother than they'r all worth. I needed a set for a Mondeo a couple of years ago and phoned the scrappies, they told me they don't even save them now since nobody bothers. Most tyre places ruin your locking nut key by using their air guns on it and it leads to a lot of trouble like you've mentioned. Full set of ordinary nuts (or bolts) no bother, end of.

Well if the Key is £21 and a new set £25 - isn't it prudent to get some more nuts, it's only £4 more.

I get what your saying, how realistic is it nowadays that someone would steel the alloys off an Auris 2009 reg.

Could happen.

Last year around parts of the Midlands, thieves were targeting Vauxhalls (Corsa's, etc), and stealing anything from wheels to complete front ends (engines, gearboxes, wings, bonnets, etc) overnight. Mind you, the ones which had the front ends pinched looked better afterwards than before .....

I'd say not very likely, especially when the hole centre and the pitch circle diameters won't fit anything else.

LOL, the crims won't know that they've stolen a useless wheel until they get home with it.

Rather reminds me of how my wife says it's all right for her to leave her handbag in the front of the car, in full view of the world, because there's no money in it.

they will fit lots of Lexus/Toyotas, some Suzukis & a few Subarus (albeit they should be used with a reducer for these). Oh & 1 generation of Mazda RX7.

In other words a minute % of the type of folk who would be interested in dealing with some chancer in a pub who's got 'em in the back of the van. Can't believe you went and Googled all that lol.

I didn't  Google ...

I suspect that a lot of people would check the PCD (5x114 is very common on Japanese cars) but forget to check bore ...

not if its going to cost an extra £90 to remove the nuts because you dont have a key for them

and the new key more than likely wont fit.
