ive got a dilemma

car 102k miles

i have a tbelt I'm gonna change tomorrow while im going to have a window of decent weathe and timer this year

going to check tensioner and idler bearings when I'm in about it. (wow these are pricey and hope they don't need changed)

Now i usually like to change waterpump at this point but this is also looking to be pricey and a PITA by removing injection pump?

So I'm looking for any reassurance or feedback as wether to bother with water pump at this stage/mileage/age  or are they really good and last 250k in taxis etc???

i can cope with the price but its gonna take a chunk of my day (2-3 hours) probably sourcing and fitting.

Seen a few on europarts from £46 on wards..I get mine done when getting belt done.though mines is just 104k on it.mechanic who does my work never fitted 1 to any other Toyota unless the owner had bought the w/pump.never had any problems not fitting them.BUT it's your call mate. For the sake of a few pounds and and bit of extra time.

Thanks mate. Im on it. Theres tell tale signs its good to change it now so went and got one from ecp. A circoli type should do for now

well that was a fruitful day.

some pictures for anyone going to tackle one in future

 

ripped out aircon as it was losing gas and had slight noise appearing at pump so never gonna spend the money involved to fix it.

has much better access for the job in hand.

less weight and belt drag = 0.001 better power to weight ratio lol

done the filters and oil when in about it

since photo have pressure washed and painted black hammerite to cross member as surface rust visible ( looks worse in photo ) my car is one of first of this model (53 plate)

just some pics of the tear down

where pump is at and whats attached

signs of pink crystallization on removal of covers so got it in good time but would have trundled on for a long time I think maybey a couple of years providing coolant was checked regularly

this is one of if not the mentalist waterpumps ive done ( I  work on plant equipment )  saying that ive had some tight ones working upside down and also through a mirror to do pumps and belts but you know what I mean, - never had to take a high pressure pump off to do one before

done the 2 auxiliary belts and thermostat also whilst I was in so it amounts to probably its last major service ( in my ownership anyway)

had new coolant and power steer fluid

 

oh yeah on old pump removed found a slight loose rumble at bearing when testing, this was original pump on a near 13 year old car at 102k miles so let that be a gauge for anyone else for future reference on this model engine

Plan a ful day

Remove radiator for more room as your dropping coolant anyway

I bought a circoli pump this came with a thick gasket for between high pressure pump and pump casing. This caused my fuel pump pulley to rub on pump casing when i bolted it down. I had to ditch the gasket which isnt totaly needed anyway.this solved my problem.

 

Keep centre engine mounting bracket / come timing cover,  slack until you have the three power steer pump bracket bolts fitted through thier holes and then tighten down the mounting bracket. This will save you fighting in a tight space to get bolts through un aligned holes.  Steer pump belt.tensioner removal aids with middle bolt fitting and removal.

I used a sealey harmonic balancer removal tool to remove crankshaft and fuel pump pulleys. This was a life saver.

Thermostat housing removal aids access to fuel pump and good idea to change thermostat but not essential.
