Starting issues 1ad-ftv

Hi!

have noticed a strange starting issue, below 14 degrees c it's takes a couple of attempts to run, first attempt it catches then stalls does this a couple of times then starts ok with a puff of unburnt diesel and goes into cold running at 1200rpm for a short time, now the weather is warmer it strarts ok not instant but fires up after a couple of revolutions. Is this likely to be glow plugs? I thought they weren't really needed on modern common rail engines unless it was below zero degrees. Other than that she starts and runs fine no smoke or misfires. Any one else experienced this? I'm giving her a full service but I would have thought if it were fuel filter or injector related it would have first of the day starting problems what ever the outside temperature?

Probably the fuel filter clogged.I'd clean mine not too long ago it was full of gunk thick slime.I thought it was the starter going .I'd refurbished the starter and new filter on and starts no problem.the fuel lines and unit in tank will be slimed too.

Yes very similar to what you described.but check that first it's a cheap part see if that works.

Replaced fuel filter today and cleaned egr was quite gummed up and manifold was really blocked, first start up was smokey and slow but might be due to air in the system after changing fuel filter, waiting for her to cool down and see how she starts!

Update..Ok so egr cleaned, new fuel filter and still rubbish first start up, I'm thinking next step suction valve problem, I know there's an upgraded valve that needs an ecu update to work but I don't have the funds at the moment, if I buy a direct replacement original style valve would this run another 90k as the first one did? Not sure what to check next as its not cold weather I don't think the glow plugs are an issue as they shouldn't be needed at the current temperatures, I used an obd2 scanner and the only stored fault was map sensor for manifold absolute pressure but I cleared it and not sure if a faulty map sensor would cause starting problems. Only had this car 2 weeks and other than the starting issue runs and drives fine.
