Yaris 1.4 D-4D Vs Auris 1.4 D-4D

I had a look on the forum and I couldn't find anything so here we go again. If I am on the wrong section, please move it.

Few days ago somebody run into my Yaris 1.4 D-4D 2003 and made a mess of it. So far I have been an extremely happy owner of a diesel Yaris, especially on 70+ mpg. I do 100 motorway miles per day return trip and my Yaris was the perfect car for my needs. It would be better if I had a 6th engine on my Yaris to keep high speeds with low revs.

Now I am considering upgrading to an Auris 1.4 D-4D and I would like your advice on it. From a quick google search I find that some of the Auris versions had issues with oil consumption and some others with the DPF.

Could somebody advice me on which years/models and engines are affected and to avoid?

Also, how is the Yaris 1.4 D-4D compared to the Auris 1.4 D-4D? I understand is the same engine but the Auris is a bit heavier. Is the engine big enough? Any owners?

NOTE: I am only considering the 1.4 diesel engines and something that can be bought with around £2k.

Thanks for the information. Is impossible to find the information I am looking for from the link as it only works with reg plates and this will not be the most efficient way. Is there any other way finding the information I looking for?

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency - formerly VOSA) recall system works by using either registration numbers or VIN's - it is the most efficient because it separates out whether individual vehicles are affected or not. The less scientific method of identification is going by the vehicle build date - and this is different to the date of first registration. A Toyota dealer should be able to identify the build date of a particular vehicle.

However one needs to bear in mind that sometimes the scope of individual recalls is broadened to include more vehicles that may be affected.

Perfect, I will be using registration numbers to check specific cars. Thanks for this

Any advice on my other questions please? How are the two cars compared in terms of engine performance? I am assuming that the early Aurises that I am looking for, have the same engine as the yarises of the same year?

Anybody who tried both?

The 1.4D4D in the Auris, Yaris, and Urban Cruiser is the same engine - newer versions have had different emissions equipment to meet the increasingly stringent  EURO standards.

You have a Mk1 Yaris which had 75 bhp and 170 nm of Torque

The Mk2 Yaris 2005-2011 had three variants of the 1.4 d4d and the MK1 Auris 2008 - 2012 had the same the same three variants

2005-2008 had a 5 speed transmission 90 bhp and 190 nm of Torque

2008-2010 had a 6 speed transmission 90 bhp and 205nm of Torque

2010-2011 had a 6 speed transmission 90 bhp 205 nm of torque with a DPF

I think you will struggle to find a 1.4d4d for your budget, looking on autotrader £2000 just about gets you a high mileage Mk1 yaris or a very high mileage early Mk2 Yaris there where no Auris 1.4 nationwide within your budget

Yeah, I was gonna say if you liked your Mk1, you'd be better off fixing it or getting another one; They are more reliable than the newer diesel ones and get better mpg to boot!

The fact that they can still sell for more than a Mk2 is a testament to how good they are. (Not to mention rare!)

It is a bit annoying tho' as I've been keeping an eye out for more modern alternatives in case they really start trying to shaft us diesel owners even more, but there's literally nothing out there that comes close! :(

I personally love it.

It does everything i want and loads of power and torque. I do 100miles per day and is spot on every time. Never missed a beat :P

The only issues i had so far is the glow plugs error which needs an ECU update but as is not affecting the car i will leave it. Especially now that the car is a Cat C. It only needs a new rear door and some the sill under the rear door. Anyway, other party's insurance paid me more than enough for what the car owes me so i have to repair it now, take if for an MOT again, or something similar and then I am ready again.

Not sure if I can a blue rear door on this forum.

Yeah, I personally think it's the best car Toyota have ever made

Good luck with the door; It's lucky the market value of the Mk1 D4D is so disproportionate!

It might be easier just to get a decent door from a breakers yard and get it painted tho'. Anything that isn't silver or sky blue seems hard to find!

Finally, just for some added inspiration, one of my favourite Yaris threads:

Enjoy! :)
