Auris 2.0 D4D engine replacement

We have a 2007 T spirit 2.0 D4D Auris.  Our garage informs us that the engine is not worth repairing following the failure of the head gasket and associated problems.  As all available D4D engines with the same engine code are most likely suffering or going to suffer the same problems has anyone found an economic solution.  For instance is there anyone around who specialises in fitting a used petrol engine.  Or will that be so complicated as to also not be economically viable.  Any solution probably needs to cost under say £1000 or the car may as well go for dismantling.  It's such a shame.  We had a 1.3 petrol Corolla that was still good at 15 years of age.

Hello Gordon - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Head gasket issues with the AD series engines in the Auris were supposedly confined to those built between Sept 2006 and Sept 2009.

After Sept 2009 production modifications were introduced to alleviate the issues. Toyota did put into place an arrangement that covered affected engine up to 7 years of age or 111,846 miles, whichever occurred first, but the majority of Auris with the affected engines are now outside this period. Toyota's solution was replacement 3/4 engines.

A few people have replaced the head gasket and skimmed the head (which was not recommended by Toyota) but this may be only a short term solution ......

Thanks.  But can post Sep. 2009 engines be used as a replacement.  I saw one advertised by a breaker but they said it can only be fitted to post 2009 cars as it was a "different shape".

It is the same engine.

The only differences I'm aware of is that Auris produced from April 2009 included efficiency improvements, a diesel particulate filter on the 2.0 D4D and a six speed gearbox. I'd be inclined to seek the opinion of your garage first (presumably they'd be carrying out any work).

It appears that only a very small % of AD engines develop the issue, especially with the 2.0 (there seems to be some potential link between power output & % failure with higher output worse) - the issue is that you can't tell which until they already start to show symptoms ....

I would have thought that the cost for an engine & labour to remove old & fit replacement was likely to breach your £1000 budget anyway?

I thought the 6 speed was standard fit for all 2.0 ... is it not worth trying your luck with Toyota anyway just to see what they say ... they might bend.

Pretty doubtful. There was a case earlier this year where the head gasket went and the car was over 7 years old with 57K miles on the clock. Toyota service history bar one service. Toyota offered a head gasket kit and oil, the dealer offered a contribution towards labour leaving a customer cost of £750, with the proviso that if there was more work required when the engine was stripped, that would be at the customer's cost.

Toyota have said they won't be contributing anything.  The garage thinks about £3000 to £3500 to rebuild the engine.  I've seen used ones for about £650, or region £1100 fitted.  But will they be any good?  Don't know if it's worth the risk.  Might be better to just eBay it with "cylinder head fault" and let a good diyer sort it out.

Just get an engine from the same year as yours ... plonk it in.

If you can get the red of the vehicle it's from you can get a check to see if it's been done already.

3Yes, that's the obvious way to go if the finances stack up and I can get a good one.  What is the "red"?
