Hi all, I went out in the rolla yesterday and after the car had warmed up i went for a good run but the cat wont hit lift, andthe eml comes on, I got P1693   OCV for VVTL Close Malfunction.

Do any of you have any ideas on how I can fix this, I have taken the lift bolts out this morning as I am replacing them tomorrow, I noticed they have wear on them but haven't snapped.  Could this cause such problems?

I dont know when it last had a service as there was no history with the car.

Also could this cause the problem?

Should I run an engine flush through and put in good quality synthentic oil in instead?

Posted

Hopefully the experienced Tsport guys will come in soon with an answer, but have to say that looks a right mess.

Is that build up of black gunge  softish or baked hard ?

If hard -ish I would be concerned about the oilways being blocked and  things like the breather hoses.

Think I would remove as much as possible off car and then run a can of something like Wyns engine flush in the existing oil for a few mins and  then see what it looks like after that.  You might have  to repeat the process a few times, or see if there is something more thorough for removing such gunk.

You say put in syth instead, what have you been running on ?

I'm unsure to which oil has been used previously as I have no history with the car,  I looked on another forum and a guy had the same engine as my car but his cam cover and head looked a lot cleaner and he was using synthetic in his car.

The gunk you can see is is squishy, I'm going to give it a goodclean tomorrow when i fit the new lift bolts as the old ones are worn

I've managed to take the OCV off and given it a good clean as the filter was full of gunk, I'm hoping after I've replaced the lift bolts it might be running better and hitting lift, I dont want to try it with the old bolts in as they have worn down

As I metioned I do not know the tsport or even what the lift bolts actually are, but think they come in to play at the higher revs ?

If so, then with oil gunge looking like that, the last thing you want to do is rev the engine as it cannot be getting correct lubrication.

If no one comes in with an answer to that sludge  then search this forum and the web, seems there are a lot of similar posts on cleaning up such a mess and importantly possible causes of it in the first place.

Heres the first one  I came to with a simple search, shows pics very similar to yours.

That looks messy! Lift bolts being worn won't be your problem unless they have snapped, which they haven't. I think the T-sport has 2 filters but not sure. Clean as much out as you can and as you said run something in with the oil to remove excess sludge.

Also check the o ring under the valve cover, can perish and cause oil starvation to cams which in turn leads to major wear on the lobes.

All the lobes look like they in good condition with a nice even shine all over the faces, you can fresh oil in the cam housing and all the oil ways are clear
