Hi

Recently bought the above car (last week) from a main dealer here in Dublin with a 1 year dealer cover warrenty.

Basically i would like to know if when my car is started and driven from cold should I be able to hear a siren type noise? (Reckon its the turbo and shouldnt be making that noise)

As the car heats up the noise becomes less noticeable but is definitely still there.

Thanks

Could be turbo noise, it's hard to tell without hearing, if you Rev in neutral can you hear it? When a turbo is worn or starved of oil they give off a loud siren noise like a police car following lol! Saying that no turbo sounds the same and some are louder than others, mine is more of a whistle. Take it for a good spin in the dark give it some high revs and pull over and take a quick look at the turbo I've had one glowing red when the bearings were shot and it wailed like a siren. Or when the car is stone cold take off the inlet hose to the turbo and check the impela for damage to the fins, do they touch the housing, get hold of the shaft and check for up down/left right movement, you should barely detect any if it moves a lot it's knackered, pull the shaft and push it an it of end float is OK but again a lot is not good. Try and spin it in your fingers is it smooth and free or stiff and noisy.

Power loss – If you notice that your turbocharged vehicle is accelerating more slowly than usual, or isn’t capable of reaching the speeds it once could, this may be a sign that your turbo is failing.

A smoking exhaust – If the turbo housing has cracked, or the internal seals have blown, oil will start to leak into your exhaust system. As this burns off, it produces a distinctive blue/grey smoke, which will probably become more apparent as the engine revs increase just following an idle situation.

A loud whining noise – Often, a failing turbocharger will make a loud, distinctive noise when under boost - a bit like a dentist’s drill or police siren if compressor wheel damaged. If you start to hear this noise from your engine, it’s definitely time to have it checked out!

Thanks for the reply Marty.Yeah it makes the noise in neutral. Its more noticeable when the turbo first kicks in cant really hear it when foot to the floor probably due to the engine noise.

The car is under warrenty so im going back to the dealer tomorrow to get it checked just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Frankie.

Its not smokey at all and it seems to pull right through the revs ok. Its my first Avensis and got it less than a week ago from the main dealer so im not sure how much power its supposed to have. But comparing it to my old passat tdi 130 the turbo seems to boost a lot later.

As I said above back to main dealer tommorrow and see what they think.

Will do. Im also having a problem with the car veering to the left when the steering wheel is held straight. Got the tracking done independently and they said its spot on so it will be interesting to see whats causing that aswell

Right so had the car in with the service dept today and a mechanic sat in the passenger seat as I drove. He acknowledged that the turbo is noisey and that it sounds like the vanes on the turbo could be chipped or bent. Also that the car is veering left when wheel is straight.

There going to take the car in the week after next as they are flat out next week and check out whats going on.

Im a bit peed off that this wasnt done before I picked up the car 1 week ago today as its supposed to undergo a 58 point health check before the customer receives it which I doubt was done as I also had to replace bulbs on the car that I pointed out during the test drive with the salesman needed to be replaced before picking the car up.

Rant over 😂😂
