Is The 1.0 Engine Strong Enough For Long Trips

I'm going on vacation with my parents this summer. I'm from Belgium and we're going to Italy for 2 weeks.

We're with 5 adults and we're all pretty long. For instance, my 16 year old sister is 1m85cm. My dad has a Vauxhall Omega, which is a fine car but in the back there are actually 2 comfortable seats. That means that with 3 people, you can't sit very comfortable, not because of lack of space but because of the design of the seats.

So me and my dad are trying to convince my mother to go with 2 cars. My moms car is a Toyota Yaris 1.0 69hp. She claims it's not capable of long distances at motorway speeds (in Germany it's advisable to drive 140-150km/h). The trips to Italy is some 1300km (about 810miles) which will takes us over the Alps.

My question to you is will the little car cope with high speeds during this long drive which will take us over the Alps. The thing that bothers me the most is the fact that the little car doesn't have a temparture indicator ;) This would be very usefull since the temprature in Italy during the summer can easily pass 40degrees celcius.

I know Toyota's are quite reliable, but I really wouldn't want too much troubles during our trip. That would ruin our vacation naturally.

Thx in advance for your time and experience!!!

I would say you'd have no probs as long as you make sure your tyre pressure is correct, oil, water etc is all fine before you set off on a long journey...

You'll have no probs! :D

Zippo...it does have a temperature indiciator...sure it's not analogue....either cold....or over hot. Might be an idea to check the cooling fan is working correctly too before setting off.

Aha, thx for the tips!! To be honest, I didn't know there was a temperature indicator led... I'll read through the manual again!

And I'm surely going to visit my dealer for a quick checkup before I'm going on this trip!

I appreciate your help!!

The car itself will be okay for the trip but with 5 people of 1.85m or above, it is going to be very un-comforatble. Also, with 5 people, going up the alps is not going to be a enjoyment.... It's going to be slow and put a lot of strain on the engine.

Hey Al,

Maybe I haven't expressed myself correctly. The intention was to go with 2 cars, one of them being the Toyota Yaris. So 2 people in one car and 3 in the other one! I know how much effort the little 1.0 engine has with 5 people... that's certainly not good for motorway speeds!

But even without 5 people at 140-150km/h (in Germany and Italy) that means keeping the engine at 5000rpm all the time. So no doubt will it be a lot of strain on the engine. The question is, will it be able to stand that!

still, thanks for your reply!!

Okay, I understand!

5,000rpm in 5th gear should not be a problem for the Yaris. Just give the car a once over before you go. (oil, water, brake fluid etc). This will give you piece of mind!

Have Fun!

No problems mate! .. After all, its a Toyota, the most reliable car manufacterer there is!

And dont forget the Toyota Hilux pickup truck was the most indestructible car ever as shown in Top Gear!

Although i dont suggest you do to the lil Yaris what Top Gear did to the Hilux ..

Anyway everything should be fine as long as you do a quick check up on it. Oh and have a good trip!
