Avensis Mk3 Tourer '09 engine reliable so far.

I have had my car 10 months and the car has done everything I expect of it. Basically the car is boring when it comes to mechanical issues. Just get into the car and start.

Every week i check the oil level and it is at the top. The oil was changed last July before I bought the car in September, so I will be changing it very soon. I have 5 litres of 0w-20 oil ready.

All the mechanics are fine and after changing the brakes, air and cabin filters, plus the spark plugs, the car has had no issues.

The body work has a few little scuffs and dents, but nothing major. The door strap cracking is there but not an issue. The metal flexes and the paint cracked. I also notice the scuff marks on the interior trim. I replaced a missing trim in the tailgate and some trim clips in the engine bay cover. It seems to be build quality that need improving.

My biggest gripe is the fuel gauge and computers seem to only allow 47 litres from full. That is a lot less than the 60 litres. I get to over 400 miles, then the warning light comes on. Fill up and get only 47 litres which is just over 10 gallons. So there is 3 gallons remaining. The fuel average is 36 mpg. When I change the oil, I hope it improves because most garages only use 5w-30 oil instead of the preferred 0w-20 grade.

The worst thing about my car is the initial voice activated bluetooth setup, and that the bluetooth is for phone calls only. No A2DP bluetooth play back for music. That is fixed with a minor stereo update in 2012. I added a Bluetooth/USB/SD adaptor which covers my audio upgrades.

Anyone who say Avensis are boring may be correct, but the roads are getting more restrictive with every type of speed cameras and traffic management, plus the busy roads.

I like to go hybrid for my next car. Auris Touring Sport.

Glad to hear that your Avensis works well :)

Mine does the same - first time I opened its bonnet 8 months after the purchase to replace a low beam bulb. Currently I have it for 2 years and 4 months - replaced a few bulbs, Wiper Blades, 2 tires, clutch and did a few services. It just works, however I haven't done a lot of mileage - 22k (bought it with 106k and currently it has ~128k).

That's just the way that they are set up with typical Toyota caution so that you don't run out of fuel - the computer counts down to a "reserve" rather than empty.

Of course once you realise that you know where you are e.g. my car today was showing 45 miles range left (about 1 gallon/4.5l of fuel for my car on average) but the warning light not yet on. As you say, car took 46.5 litres to fill (I am sure that I could have squeezed some more in if I tried). So 60l (tank capacity) - 46.5l fill =13.5l, - 4.5l for range left to run = 9l "reserve".

Much better than running out of fuel a few miles short of a filling station that you were trying to stretch to on fumes.

Think it just depends on how brave you are re: fuel, the light was on in mine and the range at 0but still managed 70 miles...600 miles on a rank and took 56 litres, not bad for a 1.8 petrol
