VSC/Engine Warning light and Traction control light on

Morning All,

Hoping you can help me out. We have just bought a new 2008 Yaris SR with only 25k on the clock.

The car has been recently serviced (full service history) and during the service they replaced the water pump.

Yesterday the engine warning light has come on. Three of them. VSC, traction control and the main engine symbol.

I called out the recovery truck who plugged the computer in which resulted in a P0014 Camshaft position error. He switched it off and checked the car over and couldn't see/hear anything wrong with it. He said it could be a faulty sensor or the fact that it hasn't been driven in a while or even a change in driving styles!

50 miles later the light is back on (felt like a small knock or bump in the road when it came on,whether or not this is co-incidence I don't know)!

Not a good start to owning a new Yaris :(

Can anyone offer any help or advice please!?

Many Thanks, Jamie

- Coolant Checked

- Fuel Cap checked fully tight as known issue

The fault code P004 is too short the minimum would be P then 4 digits without the correct code you are just guessing.

P0014 Camshaft Position "B" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
P0014

Advanced cam timing:

With warm engine and engine speed of between 500 rpm and 4,000 rpm, all conditions (a), (b) and (c) met

(2 trip detection logic):

(a) Difference between target and actual exhaust valve timing more than 5 °CA (Crankshaft Angle) for 4.5 seconds

(b) Current exhaust valve timing fixed (timing changes less than 5°CA in 5 seconds)

(c) Variations in VVT controller timing more than certain angle of maximum delayed timing (advanced)

  • Valve timing

  • Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) (for exhaust camshaft)

  • OCV filter

  • Camshaft timing gear assembly (for exhaust camshaft)

  • ECM

These DTCs indicate that the VVT controller cannot operate properly due to OCV malfunctions or the presence of foreign objects in the OCV. The diagnosis requires diagnostic equipment that can communicate and control diagnostic tests on the VVT controllers ( most likely only Toyota will have such equipment )

I am wondering if it is likely that the camshaft timing gear was removed when fitting the new water pump and this might be the route of the issue?

It might just not be sitting correctly when it has been put back on?

Really, I am just hoping it is a sensor issue!

Thanks, Jamie

The water pump is driven by the Aux belt and its replacement would have no bearing on the timing gear on the engine
