Engine warning light and P004 cam error

Morning All,

Hoping you can help me out. We have just bought a new 2008 Yaris SR with only 25k on the clock.

The car has been recently serviced (full service history) and during the service they replaced the water pump.

Yesterday the engine warning light has come on. Three of them. VSC, traction control and the main engine symbol.

I called out the recovery truck who plugged the computer in which resulted in a P004 Camshaft position error. He switched it off and checked the car over and couldn't see/hear anything wrong with it. He said it could be a faulty sensor or the fact that it hasn't been driven in a while or even a change in driving styles!

50 miles later the light is back on (felt like a small knock or bump in the road when it came on,whether or not this is co-incidence I don't know)!

Not a good start to owning a new Yaris :(

Can anyone offer any help or advice please!?

Many Thanks, Jamie

- Coolant Checked

- Fuel Cap checked fully tight as known issue

Does the engine use belt or chain for the cam?

EDIT: Apparently 2007-2014 use chain.

I'd get it to a Toyota service center ASAP. Hopefully it is just a sensor problem, but if the cam really has shifted position, it could fail and destroy the engine.

Is there anything I can do to diagnose this myself? There are no knocking noises or performance issues.

However as you say if the cam has shifted then that is a far bigger problem than just a faulty sensor.
