Prius 2016 Passenger Air Bag light ever on?

Hello,

I finally received my new Prius 2016 a couple of weeks ago and I'm still smiling :-)
This car is too good, I can't believe I already have a mileage of 71.5mpg (overall) with two 80miles trips at 85mpg each!
Not everything is perfect but this is the reason I bought it and it is really impressive.

But I have a doubt, I noticed that the passenger air bag light stays on all time ("airbag on"), while the user manual states that the light should go off after the first "status check".
I went on youtube and noticed that in many reviews they have the same lights on.
So, before going to the dealer, which is the right one? Light on all time or only at the "status check"?

Thanks,
Andrea

It's on page 51/2 of the manual:

if the front passenger airbag is 'armed' (as it is by default), then an amber "on" light plus symbol showing a child seat with a cross through it shows on the dash under the words "passenger airbag" (on Gen 3 Prius this was on the passenger side).

This will always be on as a reminder not to use a rear facing child seat as the airbag could cause injury or death to an infant if the bag went off, unless the key is used to turn a switch on the end of the dash (only visible when the door is open) to deactivate the airbag to make it safe for the child seat.  In this case this warning light changes to an "off" symbol.

It's the red airbag not worn lights that go out after a self test (unless a seat is occupied and the belt is not fastened).

Perfect, thanks for your confirmation - I did miss to refer to that part while looking in the manual.

So there is a typo at pag 115:

*1 - “PASSENGER AIR BAG” indicator

*1: These lights turn on when the power switch is turned to ON mode to indicate
that a system check is being performed. They will turn off after the
hybrid system is on, or after a few seconds. There may be a malfunction in
a system if a light does not come on, or if the lights do not turn off.

Thanks :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

I see the same thing in the Yaris. The red light on the dash DOES illuminate then extinguish, but the amber light to the side remains lit.
