Grinding noise when accelerating...

Hi

My 2012 Auris Hybrid been fine until last night...

 

Accelerating just past the POWER range and a grinding noise appears once from passenger side

 

Could it be the brakes?

Pads and disc look fine

Wheels not hot

I can't pin point exact location

 

Does not happen at any speed nor braking but ONLY when accelerating past POWER range.

 

I ease of gas, accelerate again and it's grinding almost every time , but only once for a sec or two

 

 

Any ideas?

This may sound silly, but worth a try......reach through the wheels and feel at the brake disc...in-board of the disc is a protective plate. Push it inwards all the way around on each wheel by about 10mm...it will spring back a little. These plates were rubbing on my auris front discs, the pads were not low, so the plates must be very close as standard.

Rung Toyota and they said something like that and they need a good day to investigate...so will see...

I do know my car had been back into Toyota for something similar. Osf wheel so maybe it might be what unclepoo said.

Not sure what to push (ref UnclePoo)

 

But pushed the 2 outer rings surrounding the rear disks yesterday (no such ring at the front)

 

No changes :(

Car only has service a couple of months ago...

 

Will book it in at dealers....

Local dealer abled to squeezed me in tomorrow with free pick-up/dropoff at work 

 

They have it for a day to investigate the rustling noise at power band level

 

 

I have now emptied the boot just in case some loose items making the noise

Unfortunately , not minor

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

They saying it's the snapped exhaust bracket causing the noise...but the bracket cannot be replaced and a WHOLE new mid-section is required...

Fortunately, they have replaced the whole length of the mid section under warranty - PHEW!

Is it a common problem?

Glad to hear it was done under warranty. My last car needed the same bit just after I bought it, that had no warranty, luckily wasn't as expensive.

Where on the system is this....looks just rearward of the middle silencer. 

If this happens on mine, I think I`ll be welding it myself as ours is just out of warranty. It will take longer to remove and refit the exhaust than to weld the bracket.

Yes, Unclepoo - Toyota said "we could replace the mid-section or just remove the snapped bracket" - and u right, most garages would just weld it back on...

 

It's nearer the rear (2/3 length from front)

Looks like I made the right decision when I bought mine, as my old car would have cost me probably as much as your warranty repair. The clutch finally went, the drive shaft had failed as well. Plus something else. I had sold it to a guy at work who was a mechanic before a back injury.

Hows the old girl (your car) doing, mpg wise?

 

 

Took my car on a 4 day mini-tour : 

West Yorks to South Yorks

To Midlands

Upto Humber bridge

Then home

 

Enroute took it to Toyota for £15 air con refresh

Things are good, the cars still is great.

The mpg last time took a dip, when I took a trip to Binchester roman fort from Preston. I will admit that I did some overtaking and can confirm that the feels fine at 100. The downside was it took 50 miles of my range.

Next big trip is in a fortnight, will be driving to Germany.

Just need to remember a step ladder for when I take the roof box off when I get there. ;-)

With the roof box on for 370 ish miles, the mpg still stayed over 50 ( didn't go over 65mph). Still managed to get 420 miles on 36 litres. Coming home it will probably be worse as the car will be heavier ;-)

My average on fuely.com is 66.7mpg average so far.

I will update this by the time I get home on Sunday.

I'm back.

Still managed 56mpg in good weather with the coffin on top.

Only drawback is the 70mph limit and the car definitely is slower with the roof box on.

Still better mpg than the old verso when it had the same weight.
