Toyota paint warranty

Hi troops just replaced my car for the estate version 65 plate, and only just noticed the paint on the sill at the drivers door is rubbing off, this seems to be caused by your leg touching the sill as you go in and out of the car. Question is how can Toyota give you  a 12 year warranty on the paint if this is happening to a car that' s not even a year old??

The sills are made of plastic so maybe they should have used paint that is more suited to plastic, the dealer has agreed to fix this but it is only going to happen again unless they can fit some sort of protector, same as they have at the wheel arch for stone chips, i wonder if Toyota are aware of this and if it is covered under their paint warranty, anyone else noticed this?

The simple answer is that the paintwork warranty isn't 12 years, it is 3 years. The corrosion warranty is 12 years.

See:  https://www.toyota.co.uk/caring-for-your-toyota/warranty/toyota-warranty.json

If you think there is a manufacturing defect with the paintwork on the sills, take it into your Toyota dealer for inspection.

& wear wouldn't be covered anyway " 3year unlimited mileage cover protects against defects and surface rust as a result of a manufacturing defect "

Think you guys are missing the point here, this car is less than a year old and the paint is rubbing off??? my last car was 3 years old and did not suffer from this so it is obvious that the paint is defective, makes you wonder if it is safe to polish the thing.

No we're not missing the point.

The fact that the paint warranty is three years rather than your quoted twelve years has been highlighted, and you've also been advised that if you think there is a manufacturing defect with the paintwork on the sills, to take it into a Toyota dealer for inspection.

The warranty is 12 or 3 years depending on how Toyota see it, and if you read my first post correctly FB I have taken it back to the Toyota dealer who said they would fix it, but this does not address the problem as it sure to return, so the warranty is irrelevant whether it be 12 or 3 years as it does not last less than 1 year.

But looks  like you guys don't have a problem with this, so would you be happy with the paint rubbing off a car at this age??

As they say a picture is worth 1000 words ...

You said that it is seems to be caused by your leg touching  the sill as you go in or out, that is wear & would not be covered.  However, you also say that you have just changed to it ( a 65 plate so presumably used?) so how do you know what caused or is causing it?

Of course you could always lift your leg or or fit sill scuff plates ...

Now, if it is caused by the door itself due to misadjustment etc. that would be an entirely different matter.

The wording of the two warranties in question is as follows:

12 year anti corrosion and perforation warranty

12 year unlimited mileage cover that protects against rust perforation affecting sheet metal body panels as a result of a manufacturing fault.

  • 3 year paintwork and surface rust warranty
  • 3 year unlimited mileage cover protects against defects and surface rust as a result of a manufacturing defect.

In your case the paintwork warranty will apply, as from what you claim, the paintwork has worn away rather than the sill having perforated due to rust. It isn't rocket science.

At the end of the day, the car has been bought as a used car, and one doesn't know what use or abuse it has been subjected to by the previous owner(s)/user(s). By the same token, one doesn't know whether the issue will return, either within a year or within a longer period - that is only your surmission.

Well HF you don't have to be a detective to know what is causing the paint rubbing off, same as you don't need a photo, the description should give you some idea of what's happening, as for lifting your leg yes you could do that IF you had legs like a spider, but why should you? This post is to try and help others who are thinking of buying a used Toyota and make them aware that there is a problem with the paint in this area, then you can decide to go ahead with the purchase or not. But as this area will get a lot of use then I think it is something that Toyota should address regardless of how many users the car will have, they already fit protection at the wheel arch so why not here.

At the end of the day Toyota Owners Club has no association with Toyota GB or Toyota Motor Corporation - as per disclaimers at the bottom of every page.

We don't know whether anyone from Toyota visits this forums, and, even if they do, Toyota certainly won't post on this forum.

If you wish Toyota to know about your concerns and wish to receive a reply to your concerns, then you need to contact Toyota GB directly.

Legs like a spider – lol Shuggy – and how appropriate you’re having this discussion “on the web”

Maybe Daddy Long Legs had the car before you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or maybe Puff Diddy’s mate Diddy Long Legs.

I don't have this problem & I have had my car for several years & I am also below average height with short legs.

On other  (non-Toyota) cars I have previously fitted scuff plates - they wouldn't have been available if there was not a demand.

The protection at the wheel arch is to protect the car from muck being thrown up into the space & lying there, causing rust & also for aerodynamics. Fitting mudflaps will provide additional protection to the sills from stones being thrown up by the tyres but those aren't standard fit either.

Glad to see someone has a sense of humour on this forum TG, Thing is if protection is needed in certain area's (careful now) then it should be fitted, yes seen this in other cars too but they are a lot older than this one, and like I said in previous post my last Toyota was 3 years old and did not have this problem, so in my opinion for what it's worth the paint job is not up to standard and Toyota should do something about it. But enough bitching, I am going to contact Mr T and let him know about my concerns let's see what the outcome is.

Thanks for the replies guys sleep tight don't let the bugs bite.
