Hi, I recently bought a 2005 Avensis here in New Zealand, it had run 49k kms already and I noticed that the transmission fluid is a little dark, but not yet burnt or does it smell burnt.. The dipstick has a marking for atf t iv, the engine code is 1AZ-FSE, But I've read that this engine has a CVT trans? Should'nt I be using a CVT fluid instead of a regular atf fluid? Can I use the toyota atf-IV fluid as stated in the dipstick? Also, the engine is a little noisy like a diesel engine when idle, is it normal? but it is quite sturdy and silent when crusing at speed of 120kph or more.

Cheers,

Ryan

Your car is not CVT auto. This came on the T27 Mk3 2009.

You may need to post a video, for any noise diagnosis to be made, but even then, it's better to to hear in person. Not possible from UK.

So long as the oil is topped up and fine, other source could be the chain cam, tappets or the VVTi mechanism. Also this engine is direct injection and this could be another factor.

I really thought that it was CVT, the shifting was very smooth when I am driving on the motorway.. :D The car run does fine really well, I may be just too paranoid since I am hearing it very near my ears, lol.  Thanks konrad, I will try to post a video, just for a rough diagnosis of you experts here. :)

If you want to hear engines that sound rattly, the Valvematic has a vacuum pump which I can hear with bonnet up. It makes the engine sound like a cam or tappet.

Since the engine has a timing chain, regular oil changes are a must, with good quality oil of the correct grade. Plus automatics tend not to stress the engine as much.

Enjoy the car.
