Dodgy Alternator

Think my alternator is shot, drove the car at the weekend and the engine management light, and Battery lights were lit as if there was no charge from the alternator, also checked the output and it was zero.....until that is you boot the revs to about 5000rpm, then all the lights go off until the revs drop to below 5000 and they come back on.

I'm sure it's the alternator....so my question is are they a b'stard to change ? I can see it but how the hell do you get to it ?...BTW the car is Jap G-Ltd.

Cheers

I dont think its that hard to replace, should only have two or three bolts

and might be easier to get to it from underneath.

Prob a daft question but have you checked your belt tension?

alternators are easy to get at .. but a nightmare to get out ..

you need to shimmy the while thing out on the other side of the engine I believe ..

Yeah, the belt is fine. However there is a considerable amount of oil on and around the alternator itself but I have checked it while revving the car and it does not appear to be slipping, the strange thing is that it only happened after the car had been stood for a week

to get to it, jack the drivers rear into the air and then get hte rear wheel off ..

Then take the AC belt off the car and then the Alternator belt ..

Then there are 2 bolts to remove the alternator ..

Cheers, will give it a go, does Matt from Rogue systems still frequent the forum ? I notice that they have alternators at £50

They aren't too bad to remove as long as the bolts aren't seized. I've got a seized bolt on my UK car, had to remove the alternator and engine mount bracket, which unfortunately makes it all a lot bigger. Might have to remove exhuast and drive shaft, though hadn't thought about walking it around to the other side of the engine - cheers Bibbs :).
