Seatbelt Alarm - Avensis Active 66 Plate 1.8 Petrol

Recommended Posts

Just purchased an Avensis Active Plate 66 1.8 Petrol manual - Car will be used as a Taxi so therefore I'm exempt from using the seatbelt.

Any ideas if and how I can disable the seatbelt alarm.

Regards

JP.

Logically, the seat belt alarm circuit is 'closed'  when the seat belt is disengaged (with the ignition on and you in the seat). Inserting the buckle must therefore create an open curcuit. Cutting a wire on the seat base will solve it. Rig up a temporary bridge on the loom and disconnect one wire at a time to identify the correct one. Advisable to do it in such a way that it can easily be reversed for when you sell the car.

As far as I'm aware, the exemption applies when plying for hire or carrying passengers - so there will be circumstances when the exemption doesn't apply. There is probably a menu the dealer can access to disable the seat belt warning - have a chat with the service dept.

On my (previously owned) 12 plate Avensis you could disable the seatbelt beep using techstream, but the big bright flashing light on the dash remained. Fabricate a replica buckle from a thin piece of plastic and plug it in instead. Obviously only for use when driving along your mile long private driveway ;)

Or go visit any scrap yard, they usually cut off old seat belts and use them as engine slings etc. You're almost sure to find one discarded, quick slice with the trusty plastic utility knife (set of 5 or 6 from any £1 store) and you've got yourself a plug-in. Watch out for the rottweiller though!
