Hi folks,

I have a Avensis 2011 with a TNS 510 navigation system.

I can't make music on USB stick play on the car audio, nor can I make a bluetooth phone play music on the car audio. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Your USB must not be bigger than 2gb

I don't think the capacity limit of the memory stick is the limit. 2GB is so small plus my old Connects2 USB adapter of 2007 could handle 4GB. 2GB and 4GB are now rare and not worth it considering 8GB is very cheap, what ever the brand. Just format to Fat32 for 8GB and above. I use 16BG but my USB adapter can handle 32GB. My car has the older stereo before the USB was added, but later cars with USB should do the same, plus track info which I don't get.

I would look make sure the file format is correct. I have copied this from section 3.2, page 432 of the owners manual:

 USB memory

 Compatible devices USB memory that can be used for MP3 and WMA playback  Compatible device formats The following device formats can be used:

• USB communication formats: USB2.0 FS (12mbps)

• File formats: FAT16/32 (Windows)

• Correspondence class: Mass storage class MP3 and WMA files written in any format other than those listed above may not play correctly, and their file names and folder names may not be displayed correctly.

Items related to standards and limitations are as follows:

• Maximum directory hierarchy: 8 levels

• Maximum number of folders in a device: 999 (including the root)

• Maximum number of files in a device: 9999

• Maximum number of files per folder: 255  MP3 and WMA files MP3 (MPEG Audio LAYER 3) is a standard audio compression format.

Files can be compressed to approximately 1/10 of their original size using MP3 compression. WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a Microsoft audio compression format. This format compresses audio data to a size smaller than that of the MP3 format. There is a limit to the MP3 and WMA file standards that can be used and to the media/formats on which the files are recorded.

 MP3 file compatibility

• Compatible standards MP3 (MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERII, III, MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERII, III, MPEG2.5)

• Compatible sampling frequencies MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERII, III: 32, 44.1, 48 (kHz) MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERII, III: 16, 22.05, 24 (kHz) MPEG2.5: 8, 11.025, 12 (kHz)

• Compatible bit rates (compatible with VBR) MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERII, III: 32-320 (kbps) MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERII, III: 32-160 (kbps) MPEG2.5: 32-160 (kbps)

• Compatible channel modes: stereo, joint stereo, dual channel and monaural WMA file compatibility

• Compatible standards WMA Ver. 9 • Compatible sampling frequencies HIGH PROFILE 32, 44.1, 48 (kHz)

• Compatible bit rates HIGH PROFILE 32-320 (kbps, VBR)  File names The only files that can be recognized as MP3/WMA and played are those with the extension .mp3 or .wma.

The following are the links to the manual (if they work):

https://www.toyota.co.uk/tme#/my-toyota/eManual

https://myportalcontent.toyota-europe.com/Manuals/Toyota/AVENSIS_EE_OM20B44E.pdf?_ga=1.204302608.1686083153.1479550479

In basic terms, I convert music files at 128 kbps to 320 kbps. The higher the better the quality, and with a larger memory stick formatted to Fat32, space is not an issue.

I also use CD's with music files in both MP3 and (by accident) WMA.

The bluetooth has improved over my version in two ways. The pairing is less of a faff to pair, and it supports audio playback not just voice only. The first thing is to clear or reset the stereo to remove any previous pairings. The bluetooth instructions are on page 449 of the owners manual (deleting phones, numbers and history from page 470 onwards).

The maximum number of bluetooth devices is 5, so removing the any old Bluetooth devices may help.

I nearly forgot - make the phone "visible" for pairing. I know that Android means just opening the Bluetooth menu makes the phone visible. Not sure about iPhone.
