Brake pad shims

Chaps

Just changed front discs and pads on my 2008 T180. Used Mintex all round - looks decent gear and all for 85 quid.

However, following the excellent "how to guide"  on this forum, I noted the mention of brake shims. However, none was used on the old pads, and none was included in the new pads. I re-fitted without using shims.

I have subsequently read that the pad's metal backing plate which mates with the caliper/piston now negates the use of shims, and I did apply coppergrease to prevent rattle/squeal.

Question then...Are they truly necessary?
