Starting problem new information

Hi all, a while back I had a starting problem  and tried several different cures, so far I have replaced the fuel filter, run some diesel injector cleaner through and replaced the scv valve,

i have noticed the following.. now the weather has got colder i.e.. 10-13 degrees in the morning she starts fine and goes into fast tick over. If I don't start first thing and the temperature outside rises to say 16 degrees she won't start for several attempts. I'm now thinking maybe a violent or fuel temperature sensor or maf sensor? As usual no elm codes.

any further ideas??

Thanks I only painted the wheels a week ago but really glad I chose the gunmetal colour!

Im 50/50 about the injectors, I would have thought it would be a constant problem. I'm going to bite the bullet and get a diesel specialist to check her over! 10 degrees this morning and started first turn of the key.

Yeah rule them out for now as it isnt a great temp difference to dramatically alter the viscosity of the diesel.

Are Battery and starter plus all connections in good condition.

Think i remember something to do with a bad hot start fault relating to early starter motors that were updated to a better type.

Anyway the theory was that at a given temp and above the insulation resistance inside starter to the body decreased causing an earth fault or high current causing simulated Battery low fault to ecu or injector driver causing lock out of unit hence no fuel.

Or hope its not key immobilizer probs but never heard of this on these cars

I changed the Battery just a few weeks ago as it was leaking but the new one hasn't really made a difference, the starter motor idea is interesting but I had read this was more noticeable on hot engine start and with mine hot starting is not an issue it's just that first start of the day after that it's fine.

Hi Marty, I'm on my third starter motor 54 plate D4D and would suggest you replace that first. if its not that at least you'll have a spare starter motor when it does eventually go.

My symptons for poor starting were erratic, sometimes it was cold start other times it was hot start.

Do you have the earlier 1CD or later 1AD engine the picture and you mentioning the SCV as a singular suggest you have the later 1AD?

1CD engined cars are known to have a starter motor issue that usually exhibits on warm/hot engines, this usually shows as sluggish cranking that eventually starts the engine but it is initially lumpy & rough. Toyota redesigned the starter to fix

1AD engines are known to have an SCV valve issue when cool/cold that exhibits as prolonged cranking but at normal speed with the engine eventually starting normally, Toyota redesigned the SCV and updated the engine software to increase cold cranking fuel pressure.

Hi yes I have the 1ad engine and I replaced the scv valve with a direct replacement brand new and not the uprated valve, I have ordered tech stream so I can give it a proper going over but I'm starting to suspect an injector problem. As I understand it the scv valves were a problem due to sticking when supermarket fuel is being used and not enough lubrication passing through the fuel system. I've been using fuel additives for a while each fill up and there is no change in fitting the new scv and would have thought it would have cured it even if just for a few thousand miles until the new one got gummed up.
