2006 Avensis 2.0l d4d

Hi.

Help please if possible. I have 2006 avensis D4D 2.0l  hatchback with 54,000 on the clock.

The turbocharger didn't seem to be kicking in properly, the fuel usage increasing and the " Squeal " from the turbo on its build up and drop off has gone.   My grandson ( car recovery technicion ) had a look at it for me.  Nothing showing up on the meter so it was assumed to be the EGR blocked.

Took it off, cleaned out a huge amount of carbon and refitted it.  Noticed the rod into the bottom of the " activater " was seized.  He tried to move it with a lever without success.  Reassembled everything.  It now starts better but the supercharger no longer jumps in, rather a gradual increase in power.  It has had all its services and oil changes.  He now suggests removing the turbo etc. to try to find the cause.

Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.  My knowledge on car engines finished with the Ford 8 side valve engines many years ago ( I'm 75 )

Hi Keith,

If the actuator is seized then depending on the position you will get no or little boost. This will require removal of the turbo and manifold to sort, and may require a replacement manifold depending what you discover. I've found it easier to remove the turbo cartridge (CHRA) from these engines, then you can see the wastegate inside. That may allow you to free it up.

Regards

Ian

excuse if i sound arrogant - not trying to be

squealing from supercharger has gone!

there should be

no supercharger and no squeal

squeal could have been the turbo bearing on its last legs and has now lost efficiency or compressor scraping the compressor housing or from a boost leak

you need to start from scratch- this means getting hands dirty and removing some parts to clean and visialy check

don't lever anything and possibly bend , unadjust or break any actuating rods or linkages

ideally egr clean and able to operate and seal manifold from wasted boost through it ( my egr is blanked)

turbo shaft checked for play or broken fins

intercooler and pipes leak free

is it a variable vane turbo? build up of soot can stick these vanes and cause sluggish operation, also if your son has been levering stuff then it may have been levered out of adjustment and a bit of trial and error may be needed

Hi.  Thank you for your response

No problem just glad of your advice.

When I put squealing, I meant that there is a sound as it kicks in and out.  Whistle, squeak, not sure how to describe  it.  We have removed the EGR and pipe, cleaned a lot of carbon out of it.   I was watching and he didn't use a lot of force so hopefully no damage there, nor was any adjustments made.  The rod in question appears to be held on by a circlip and wondered, if this could be removed, could we tell if it is the shaft into the turbo charger that is stuck or in the activater at the top of the rod that is gunked up.  If it is the unit at the top of the rod, can that be stripped and cleaned or best to replace it.

Re variable vane turbo, I have no idea but will try to find out.

You help is really appreciated.

Keith
