Headlight bulb upgrade?

I have just upgraded from the Philips X-tremeVision Pro150 HIR2 to the Philips Ultinon Access LED car headlight bulb (HIR2) 6.000K and they seem like a good upgrade for a swap in unit from a big brand name.

The are massively whiter than the halogens, as you can see them compared to the halogen side lights, I would say that the beam pattern is very good, as you get a nice smooth beam with no hot spots, the don’t seem to add any long distance to the beam, but there is a nice solid block of light in the centre of the road on high beam.

I would say in the real world they are about 20% brighter than the Philips X-tremeVision, I think the X-tremeVision are the brightest conventional bulbs you can get in the HIR2 fitment so that’s not too bad, the main place you notice the brightness is on the curbside, so not a bad update for the price, I hope they will outlast two sets of halogens as they will pay for themselves.

I found them cheapest on Amazon for £40 for a pair on the below link if you are interested.

Thank you. Interesting to read!

I have standard headlight bulbs - but I DO have LED front side lights and rear LED number plate bulbs.

No MOT issues this week.

I think MOT testers are becoming more pragmatic.

I always use my sidelights during the day.

In a smaller car I don't want to be not seen!

( No MOT issues on anything - again = happy. )

As far as I'm aware there is no MOT requirement for the type of bulbs used in side lights or parking lights, only headlights.

So back in June '23 I fitted some Philips X-tremeVision Pro 150 HIR2 to my previous '09 IQ2 (I wrote about it above). Sadly my wife wrote that car off a couple of months ago, but the silver lining is that I picked up an '11 IQ with 5000 less miles, leather seats, FTSH, and the 1.3 engine for £600 less than the insurance settlement. Anyway, blah, blah - I'm very happy with the new car, but drove it for the first time at night last night and was reminded just how bad the standard bulbs are! Weak, yellow light, even on full beam, and exceptionally poor spread with a concentration on the kerb and a huge hole in front of the driver. Again found myself wondering how Toyota thought this was ok, given the quality of the rest of the car. I've just ordered a new set of the Philips bulbs: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08KZLC38J?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp&th=1

Hi, there

Are also these Philips ones on the market that are really good. I have them on my motorbike and they're excellent.

The same is true for me. ^^^

It seems that the MOT tester is interested in the height, direction, strength & coverage of the beam and doesn't look to see whether the headlamp bulbs have an EU conformity rating or not.
