auto gearbox oil

hi all new to this forum,so bear with me,i am after changing the oil in my auto gearbox,previa  2002 2.4 2az fe engine ,the lad that had the mpv before me told me he had changed the oil 2 weeks before i bought it,using atf/steering fluid,to me the box struggles to change gear,as though the oil is too thick,i know there are lots of various oils out there,so anybody know the oil to get,phoned toyota sheffield to see about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.thanks.

You must get this  oil out and put in automatic transmission oil, on your dipstick it will say hot cold , transmission oil must be hot drain it.

i have drained all the oil out,but is it synthetic oil or the ordinary atf oil

Go to TEOC where somebody will be able to direct you to the correct oil for your vehicle.

I believe that Toyota Type T-1V ATF is recommended.

The correct grade is ATF T-IV and you will need 3.5 litres ( otherwise called type 4 ATF fluid ) 

Part number 08886-82025 from your local Toyota dealer ( 5lt can )
