Rear door locking?

Only had the car a month so not worked this out yet but the rear back doors are sometimes locked when I get out of the car. I think they are only locked when a front passenger has been in car. So I have to press remote on key to open car to get stuff off back seat.

With our Hyundai, which has auto locking, if the key is left in the ignition after driving and after the auto locking has operated, we have to press the dashboard button (which also has an illuminated LED) to cancel the lock, when trying to access the other doors or the boot from outside. Presumably the system on the Avensis is similar - but may not have a dashboard mounted unlock button, relying instead on the keyfob.

Does connecting the rear seat belt have any effect?

Think it is more to with how the auto locking operates, rather than whether or not seats are occupied/seat belts fastened.

there is a rocker switch for door locks on the driver's side door arm rest. The doors won't only lock if a passenger has been in the front seat - however, if the front seat passenger gets out but not the driver the other doors won't automatically unlock (afaik) whereas they will if the driver opens their door.

Also, add that the driver must open the door within a certain time, after shutting off the engine. Then the passengers can open their doors too. My auto was disabled, and I enabled it for a time, but found it irritating then disabled it again.

Thanks everyone I will try a few things out. It's got auto lock on at the moment so I understand about not being able to open a door from the outside when engine running, but it confused me when I got out of the car (engine off) and back door won't open. It usually opens but this time a passenger had got out too.
