I think this is serious.

Noticed temperature gauge fluctuating upwards from its normal 9 o clock position. 

Checked the expansion tank and it was empty. Had to fill it up 5 times on the journey home. Got home and it was empty again.

There is no engine light showing on the T Sport.

Physical inspection didn't show up anything, no visible leaks or leak from gasket. 

Is this excessive water consumption an indicator of a damaged engine?

Any views welcome.

Hi,

Might help a bit more if you say how much coolant you added vs how many miles you were doing ?

 

Typically 3 prime areas to loose the water from -

A leaking radiator / cap  or hoses .

Water pump seal/bearings.

Cylinder Head Gasket.

Often  the leak only occurs when its hot and the water evaporates away quickly, so you need to look for a tell tale  trace of dried coolant, often a muddy orange colour.

Depending how fast the leak is happening, a CHG  can cause a steamy exhaust.

A trip to a garage for a pressure / compression test should highlight the cause if you cannot see any clear visual signs.

Assume no one has been working  around the radiator drain tap ...?

This was over a 90 mile distance. Put in 3 litres in rages to get me home.

Perhaps it not as bad as I feared then. I know someone local who is an expert with engines so will take in next week.

Happened to me on my Impreza. Turned out it was the coolant hose, being old and that. After further inspection....slight split in the hose. Replaced and all was ok 👌

There is an update about this. A small leak was found in the lower corner of the radiator. New radiator and temperature gauge back to its regular 9 o clock position. Being returned to garage on Monday for a new clutch.

Did you spot the leak yourself or did a garage do a pressure test ?

There was no coolant on the drive so it wasn't easy to spot. Showed up on the garage pressure test yes.
