Poor Quality Glass

Hello everybody.

We've owned many Toyotas in the past, literally been through them all over the years, and we've never noticed any issues with the window glass in terms of quality. However our current t27 has endless amounts of scratches on them. We dont know where they come from. Some are deep enough to catch your finger nails. We can only assume that the glass is poor quality if it damages that easy. Our vehicle is normally handwashed by us however in winter months it does go through the valet guys.

Has anybody else noticed this issue with their vehicle? Our last vehicle was an 06 Corolla and not a single mark on any of the windows.

Its a strange one!

Checked my windscreen. I heard a stone hit it on M40, on my way to the Classic Car Show on Sunday. Most the chips are I found are very tiny and below the surface. Only one was near/on the surface. Glass all smooth apart from the one mentioned.

The windscreen is original!

There is a high risk of chips on vehicles used on motorways. I always wash my car myself, even during the winter.

Here are some photos of the ones I found. The first 5 are smooth and below the surface.

The following and last picture is the only one I can feel:-

Interesting...thank you.

I should have clarified...i was referring to the side windows in particular. I have some ruler straigh lines...and others squiggles. No idea whats causing them.

All my glass are original Toyota including the windscreen.

Yes I have to agree I have a 2011 T27 Tourer and the glass on all sides of the car is getting marked, I have twice had to use a glass polishing kit on the windscreen to remove marks left by the Wiper Blades.

When the sun is on the windscreen you can see it is just a mass of tiny chips all across it.

On side windows I would imagine that it is probably caused by dirt/grit trapped in the seals or some such scoring the glass as it moves up & down.

Thats the only possible explantion i could think of. I guess it means keeping an eye on the seals more. Sad i know. Scratches are so annoying to look at. I'll have to look into these glass scratch repair kits...see if they actually work.

I had scoring on my Mk1 drivers window, which was there before I owned it. The Mk3 is fine. Apart from the windscreen, all the other glass is fine. Any marks are dirt. Since my car is an early TR, it the glass it not tinted.
