Boot size measurement. Proper dimensions not just capacity.

One of the main reasons I bought my Tourer was the carrying capacity. I sometimes carry a Dahon Cadenza 26" 16 speed folding bike, sometimes I carry lots of tools, then other times it will be empty. I have carried suitcases for 4. All with the cover in place and seats up. Then there is the Ikea run. No problems.

I have a friend who get secondhand furniture and she has asked me to collect items on occasion. I have had to refuse because some items were simply too big! I ask her to find out the dimensions, and know if my car can carry the item or not.

When I was looking to replace my old car, the requirement was that it car carry my Dahon Cadenza in the boot with the seats up and the parcel shelf/cover in place. Nowadays boots are measured in litres, which means nothing to me. Cars with so called larger capacity boots, still cannot accommodate my bike, and keep out of site of thieves! What i need to know are the actual dimensions - length/width/depth.

The other issue is the tailgate aperture size. This restrict how large an item can be fitted inside the car.

The large complete cupboard/wardrobe/box item I can load and carry is 185 x 95 x 65 cm. This takes into account the internal projections and clearing the rear window comfortably. Longer items can be carried so long as they are lower. Like wise taller items up to 70 cm can be loaded if narrower (85 cm), as the tailgate is higher across the centre.

This wardrobe loaded with ease.

The Auris Touring Sport has a larger capacity of 1635, whilst the Avensis is 1609. I wonder what Auris owners think?.

I once carried 6 ft fridge in my old Mk1 at a squeeze.

As I have said before whilst the Auris Tourer theoretically has a larger load volume than the Avensis Tourer imo the Avensis has the more practical load space (at least for my needs).

I did look at them both last time that I replaced my car & I suspect that the Auris' extra volume comes from having a more upright rear screen. The Avensis has a longer/wider load bay which is more useful for me.

I forgot to add that the measurements are with the under floor storage trays and full size alloy spare wheel in place.

Mike. Thanks for the useful link.

Scott. I agree with you. I may go to a dealership and measure for myself. The Auris TS is one of my future replacements.
