Pre-Purchase Inspection Issues

Hi,

I have just had a pre-purchase inspection on a 2006 Toyota Avensis (2.4L petrol) and the report has come back with the following comments:

  • Rocker cover leaking oil
  • Motor getting noisy - suspect lifters
  • Brakes spongy
  • Handbrake weak
  • Light misfire evident

Are these issues easily resolved or do they have the potential to lead into other issues?

I would say look at another car. The engine issues, especially the noisy top end could be very expensive! How many miles/kilometres has the car done, and any history?

Misfire could be spark plug or coil pack. An OBD diagnostic scan will confirm the cylinder/s misfiring, and swap spark plugs or coils with a good ones, will hopefully confirm and fix the issue. If the misfire continues then the engine has more serious problem - valves or piston rings. Compression test will confirm this.

The brakes are easier. May just need a complete fluid change and bleed.

Oil changes could have been missed, which depending on how the car was used, cause the valve train noise. That is why the history may help you decide, to buy or not.

Unless the car is going very cheap, and the faults are pinpointed so the cost can be worked out, walk away!
