2005 Toyota Rav 4 XT-R D-4D DOWN ON POWER

Hello, I have recently purchased a 2005 2.0 Diesel Rav 4. It's done 176,000 miles. It's down on power. No engine management lights on. I've had it plugged in to diagnostics and no faults show. I've also had it looked at by a mechanic whom couldn't find any issues. In more detail it struggles up hills to the point of dropping down gears, won't rev past 3500 rpm in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. It struggles to get to 4000 rpm in any gear but when you reach just under 4000 in 1st and 2nd it has a surge of power and continues towards red line. It also struggles to start when warmed up. Otherwise drives well. Would be great if someone could point me in the right direction. The latest thing I'm trying is Ecomotive Clean Drive fuel additive with £15 worth of premium Esso diesel. Thank you for reading my post. Any expert advice would be really appreciated.

Not an expert, but it sounds like the sort of thing a choked up EGR valve would give rise to.  I believe they can get clogged with carbon, and at 176k that would not be surprising.

Clogged EGR valve

Clogged fuel filter

Clogged air filter

all 3 are easy fixes

If turbocharged - could be turbo issues - a multitude of reasons here! Not so easy a fix...Search this forum

Possible dirty injectors at that mileage
