Guys...i dont get it...filled up a full tank of Shell v power nitro last thursday...160 miles later im down to half a tank dead on. Surely something isnt right. To clarify 160 miles more urban than motorways but still...somebody previously mentioned that Shell v power nitro doesnt agree with winters and that i should use regular diesel...however i stress about my dpf etc and prefer to keep things clean.

Any help appreciated.

Morning guys...any ideas...come on lads!

Rang my Toyota dealer here in Leicestershire...booked in for a fortnight...promised to investigate my consuption issue AND a clutch judder which developed more prominent this weekend...wow scAry experience...duh duh duh sort of stalling issue. Just came off the motorways and it freaked me out to say the least. However drove fine this morning. Toyota charging 45.00 for a diagnostic...and the rest depends on the outcome and made clear our extended warranty may/may not cover the issue if found!!!! Fingers well crossed.

Sam.

I am surprised other members who are experience with diesels, have not posted. I do understand everyone has lives beyond the forum.

There is another post currently running -

One response from HartmannX (Morten) seems to be very knowledgeable.

I apologise for causing you more concern, when I said that my petrol was more economical, but I would be very disappointed if my car was using that much petrol. I have done most things like oil and filter service, air filter and spark plugs. I made sure the oil is 0w20 as per handbook. Some dealers, garages and car spares shops keep list 5w30 oil!

I could list possible issues with your car, but that will be pure guessing - SCV, injectors, ECU needs updating, DPF keeps regen, general service, tyre pressures, I could go on.

Transmission judder! Lets hope that is not the dreaded DMF or clutch wear( depends on mileage. The DMF on recent Toyota's seem to be fairly reliable.

Hope for the best.

Konrad

Try running an air intake and fuel system cleaner through the engine.

Then give it an Italian Tune-up

FYI, all combustion engines experience worse fuel economy during the colder months.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Guys,

A quick update,

it came to me, just like that last week, we've always had a Garmin adaptor plugged in under our dash, it plugs straight into the diagnostic port, it communicates with our satnav, now i remembered reading in the instruction manual for it years ago,  if the engine idles erratically or if you experience a higher fuel consumption, to discontinue use and contact Garmin!!!

I cant believe that i didnt think of it any earlier, i unplugged it, and immediately i could hear how the engine seemed a lot calmer, and now im dropping a notch every 3-4 days on the fuel indicator, so all seems as per normal for us now...yay.

Wanted to share this with you, thanks for all your support.

Oh and regarding my clutch judder issue, that seems to have settled too, although i doubt it had anything to do with Garmin adaptor, i think more to do with my other halfs seating position being too far away from the pedals hence failing to balance things properly!!!

Took it down to Toyota today as it was booked in, they determined after a few hours that no faults were found and that everything was absolutely fine, so fingers crossed everything is then. Had the pleasure of using a Yaris for the day as courtesy...lets just say...im holding onto my Avensis forever!

Thank you for telling us the resolution - obviously none of us would ever have come up with that but it's useful knowledge for future use!

I never knew that this type of device existed, so did a quick research and found the following:-

https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/38354

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/ecoRoutheD_Instructions_EN-FR_.pdf

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/ecoRoute_HD_supplement_EN-FR.pdf

So this device gives real-time monitoring as well as diagnostics.

Sam, I think you are causing your own stress :bangin:.

At least that is sorted.

Just wanted to say thank you to all that participated in this thread, much appreciated.

I forgot to add, on my last fill up, i used Shell's standard diesel, from day one of ownership ive only ever filled Shells v power nitro, my reason for going standard is i recall somebody on the forums mention that v power doesnt work so well in the colder winters, and i think agree with them now, running on standard diesel the car seems a lot smoother, more power in my opinion, feels lighter, and i seem to be getting more miles, i hear Shell have the best quality in standard diesel fuels so i dont think im too worried, im now thinking whether i should continue with v power in future???

If you don't continue with V-power then I would suggest that you use something like one of Archoil's (other brands are available  ) cleaners every so often.

I know that HonestJohn recommends V-power (as well as more frequent oil changes). I use it because I hope to keep the engine cleaner, for longer rather than expecting better mpg/performance.

I agree with you Heidfirst...i will continue with v power to keep things clean...but maybe every second fill up.

Have you tried BP's version of their magic diesel yet? Ultimate is it called?

hi i'm new to forum.. i bought a  109k 2007 rav4 2.2 d4d the other day it also was doing low mpg and also had loads of diesel knock, i used some stuff called seafoam put a can in half tank of diesel run until nearly empty and change fuel filter at end of it, i'm getting 50ish local running and 54 on a run and no extreme diesel knock. i also put a can in engine oil and ran it for 300 miles as  it cleans out all the carbon a treat, sorts out cam follower noises due to carbon ingress.   i'm been repairing cars for most of my life and trued all kind of additives over the years and the  seafoam is by far the best working stuff to clean out fuel system and engine flush before a service,,  toyota use a injector type that is prone to build up that effects them a lot, so need to be clean
