Touch 2 with go free map update?.

I have just bought a 2015 Avensis with touch 2 go.

I understand that they should have three years free map updates, the map on the system is 2014 v3, when I go to My Toyota to update the maps they are asking me to pay £109.00.

Should I have a free update?  and if so does anyone know how to get it?.

Thanks guys.

Have you registered your software on the Touch & Go web site? If not try here:

http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-touch-go-how-to-register-your-touch-go-system

Just follow the instructions, you will need a USB memory stick to copy the details from your vehicle onto the site.

Updates are free for the first 3 years.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, yes it is registered and still they ask to be paid?.

They will allow me to download the existing map F O C but that's not a lot of help.

That's unusual, as when my vehicle was within the 3 years free updates period,  I just connected my USB stick,  which had a copy of the current version on the vehicle, and when logged onto my account, if there were any updates, it flagged it up.

I take it, it recognises what version you have on your USB stick?

Can't help you anymore, as like most owners, I stopped updating once the 3 years expired as it a ridiculous price to pay for updates.

Free updates are only a recent thing ( mid 2016 ) and only available if the car had software 6.7.0 ## or higher installed from factory if you have a lower version than 6.7.0## then you can update to the latest software of 6.8.1## map 2016 v2 but it is chargeable, once updated you then get the 3 free updates.

Prior to this only cars with Go+ or Go Pro got free updates these where only usually fitted to top spec models as standard and where optional on some other specs. To see if you have a low version software ( Go ) or High version ( Go+ / Go Pro ) find your software version if it reads for example 4.4.0#L it a low version if its 4.4.0#H its high and has free updates. Later software versions may include an E or W in the version this denotes eastern or western European maps

Hi Devon Aygo

Thanks for you reply The software version is 4.4.1WL, so it looks like I have been misled by the Toyota dealer and will have to pay.

my understanding is that if you pay the £109 you will now get 3 years updates for that payment. http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-touch2-with-go-receives-major-software-upgrade

That is a bargain compared to what other manufacturers charge for their updates but in common with most (all?) of those the actual map data will always be quite old because it has to go through additional testing/qualification compared to a separate unit like a Garmin/TomTom satnav which is not integrated into the car's systems.

That sounds a better deal Scott , but before deciding to update Dennis,  I would read the comments at the end of the article as there is some unhappy customers out there who mention all sorts of problems with the updated software. Perhaps someone can reassure us that its a worthwhile update.

From what I have read on this and previous posts, Toyota's navigation looks great to have, until you have to use it and update it!

Then all the issues mentioned start to surface.

I don't have built in navigation, and have 2 good mobiles - the Samsung has Google maps and now Here Maps, and my Windows phone which has Here Maps. Here Maps is free and you can download the country or countries of your choice, and you can use offline, saving data. Online is needed for traffic alerts and updates. The map updates are free. and unlike Google, permanent. With Google you only download the zoomed in area you need and it deletes after a time (30 days) with warning!

Some owners have changed their car stereo to one with Apple Car Play or Android Auto, and still have full integration. Toyota need to start using these as their own interface is not user friendly, from what I read in the comments from the link in the previous posts. It must about royalty and shall I say being too stubborn to admit there is something better.

In the Toyota Avensis UK Facebook page a member based in "Peterborough?" does updates - http://toyotamapsupdates.com/   I wonder how legal these updates are?

When we talk about out of date up to date, how many new roads are built, roads closed permanently, one way road changed or created, newly built estates and road name changes? There has been a lot of speed limit reductions recently, but they are sign posted so the driver should spot these.

If I had to use built-in navigation, I would just use it as a guide. If I had time to plan a route, I would use my phone as the main guide.

Konrad C, you are right and on my previous 2011 Avensis I gave up using the built in satnav due to the cost of maps and the fact you have to sit in the car to program it.

I use Sygic on my phone and on a 7" tablet and found this to be far better, one off payment at the time around £14.00 for lifetime use, TomTom maps updated every few months, link to Dropbox to save all routes etc which can be called up on any Android device.

It's just annoying to find that the Touch 2 with go is not what it's cracked up to be and the expected free updates are not to be had, ah well it's back to Sygic for me.

Just to add, it is definitely time Toyota got their act together with in car technology, it spoils an otherwise great car.

Yes  I have had a look at the comments on the link, there are an awful lot of unhappy customers and Toyota don't seem to have any answers.

Tbh I suspect that it's more to do with Harman. Having said that I'm not sure that many other manufacturers' satnavs of the same generation are any/much better - was in my friend's top of the range Peugeot 508 SW the other day with a very different interface but if anything worse usability!

I strongly suspect "not at all". As an UK e commerce website they are meant to have contact details (address, phone), terms & conditions etc. on the website but they don't ...

If I had to use built-in navigation, I would just use it as a guide. If I had time to plan a route, I would use my phone as the main guide.

I still buy a road atlas every year, just as a backup ...

Acutally I have a atlases in the car too. The Collins which covers Greater London (had 3), and a couple for the rest of UK. I also have an AA London and South East England in the house which I carry on occasion. I do buy the cheap UK atlas every couple of years, but the two big ones I mentioned earlier are a older. Might check to see what is on offer. Thanks for reminding me Scott.
