Very Poor MPG

The fuel gauge in the Auris and some other Toyota models operates in a non-linear way - an example is contained in the following thread:

Yea I noticed the guages! I took a photo today, I have to upload it!

It shows full fuel, 51 miles driven and 248 miles left to go!

Hi Cooket3,

With regards the SR180 it is a lovely car I've had mine now for a year my initial worry was fuel economy it also had problems starting but this was due to a poor connection from the terminals to Battery so disconnected the Battery wire brush cleaned the Battery terminals and same for the connectors re-connected and it has been fine ever since, it has flown through it's MOT without a single issue touch wood long may this continue.

When I purchased the car first thing I did was get it serviced and after speaking to a local Toyota specialist he asked me what type of driving i would be doing my response mixed as i drive sometimes on the motorway and sometimes inner city stop start.

He suggested rather than just going for the standard 5w30 oil which everyone and their mother seems to recommend even the dealer suggested this the actual manual suggests 0w30 and the cost difference is £1 over the two oils for the amount needed so I went with 0W30 and have just ordered more for this year's service it is better for cold starts.

I also changed every filter also Oil, Air, Pollen and Fuel and for a good 10 months the car has run Shell v power diesel as I was unsure of what the previous fueling was on the car but recently gone for regular Shell diesel, economy for me depends on the drive heavy foot I can get anywhere between 28 - 38mpg motorway 38 - 48mpg again depends on if I'm flooring it or driving normally to get to 70mph.

Some of the folks on the forum also use diesel fuel system cleaners such as BG244 or Forte I've used one by wynns and redex as it was on offer but it has been suggested to me use it once every six months but I would also recommend cleaning up the EGR mine was filthy and I did this in the summer I will possibly do it again this week when I get the car serviced. I would do all the simple maintenance bit and also check on the trip tank to tank what you get on average i get 360 - 400 miles if its motorway driving I get even more.

sorry to waffle on....

Thanks for the input mrimmy ill try that engine oil next service.

As mentioned above here are some pics of my awful fuel tank displays!

My last fuel tank got me 317.2 miles before i refilled. This was with normal fuel. Filled it to the brim with 43.43 litres which is 9.5532645 gallons, if my math is correct thats 33.2mpg, utter cr*p. I do mixed miles on city and motorway

I have just bought a drakebox tuning chip which will hopefully boost my poor mpg. Ill keep you posted how it goes

I've often wondered, does the range display adjust for previous/actual fuel consumption on these? Certainly it doesn't seem to on my 1.6 petrol Auris.

A full tank on mine has always displayed a range of around 390 miles in the three years I've owned it, despite changing from covering mainly short journeys in the early days, to doing almost entirely long runs now.

33 mpg is totally hopeless. If I drove my car like I stole it, maybe I could get such results. Is Toyota easy to tune or adjust?  Or is a tuning box the only way to go? What about the EGR, has it been blocked, the EGR is known to cause all sort of trouble

The fuel consumption that owners have posted on Honest John's Real MPG ranges from 30 to 44 mpg.

Yes 33 mpg is an outrage, especially when Toyota claim 35mpg for city driving!! I got worse at mixed. Its a disgrace and I am very light footed and follow the change up and down a gear light that shows on the dash

I have fitted a drakebox chip and ill see how it goes but if this continues I am getting rid of the car, its just a huge drain on cash.

Im thinking of contacting a toyota garage and getting them to give it a complete look over as it is getting nowhere near what they say. But I have a feeling they will just say "because its old"

No, they don't. They quote figures (the only ones that they are legally allowed to) according to the NEDC tests which according to Wikipedia " The NEDC, which is supposed to represent the typical usage of a car in Europe, is repeatedly criticised for delivering economy figures which are unachievable in reality. Let us know how the drakebox tuning box goes, is there a link to where you purchased this?

I just cleaned my EGR valve this evening, very quick and easy to do. Have you done this already? there is a post that explains how this is done. Prior to cleaning the EGR, driving 2 days on motorway and town, getting 42.5mpg average but thats whilst going on the slow lane.

I've had a civic 2.2 ctdi and that gave me around 60mpg sitting on the slow lane, 55mpg doing 80-85. Although the Civic was nowhere as fun to drive than the sr180.

I will keep you posted on the Drakebox. Im nearing emptying my tank, but I think the drakebox is set to zero/off as their explanations are non existant! I will top up diesel soon and turn the box to the max and post the result. I will clean out the egr too and need to check the dpf filter

Please don't quote other 2.2ltr diesel mpg as it makes me cry!! I would be happy with 42.5mpg, i drive slow nowadays to increase mpg on this car

So My initial full tank gave me 340 miles with 2 bars left. I did clean my EGR after driving 100 miles into the tank. I did drive relatively fast due to the bluespark i got a few days ago.

Filled up again with Shell V Power Diesel (or whatever its called). Have the Bluespark Pro tuning box. Driving on slow lane total of 30 miles including 20 miles of motorway. Got avg of 53mpg. Very pleased.

The Bluespark has transformed the car... so much torque, without it - it was as slow as my 140bhp civic 2.2.

Just finished my full tank with Drakebox set at 0 and got simmilar mileage so it works ok, set the chip to the max yesterday and went into recovery mode, oops! Sorted it out now and will try again ad 30% power as the instructions suggest!

How are you judging your mpg? Bearing in  mind that the box is tricking your ECU you can't rely on the car's readout.

My jumper is on the middle setting, not sure what jumper 1 (for more economy) is - LEFT most or RIGHT most on the bluespark. There is no indication of jumper numbers on the board.

reserve to full tank refills. Before the tuning box it was not so great. After it has improved. Also worth noting the weather has also been bad this week at -2, -3, C. Shell Nitro Diesel also in the tank.

Finished my full tank and got just over 34mpg, still rubbish, slight improvement but it has been a fair bit colder, but i did an additional journey on a motorway so I really cant tell if the box has improved anything. Now set the box at 60% and see how that one goes

You seem to be getting really poor mileage.

My 1.6 TR petrol Auris is showing 42.5mpg in the trip computer, and I do ~5miles city driving and 15 miles motorway each way. I have started driving slower, keeping at 55-60mph on the motorway, leaving greater distances between me and the car infront to minimise brake usage and just driving gentler. I have only started doing this for the past couple of weeks, but it has been creeping up with my more careful driving.

I don't know how accurate the trip computer is though, but it seems to be going in the right direction.

so been using 2 full tanks of Shell nitro diesel so far..

maybe because of the better weather now, but have 2 bars left and already done 365 miles. have been driving on fast lane motorway.

as previous chats have suggested that regardless of what speed u drive the sr180 it gives the same mpg, i can second that.

happy so far

Finished another tank, got just over 35mpg, but again weather has been better and i did a few less short trips. So I dont know about the chip.

I have now blocked off the egr and removed the chip. I did around 23 miles and everything was ok, then the engine warning light came on along with the stability control symbol, the computer said check engine and check vsc and has gone into limp home mode. Is this a standard response to the egr being blocked off? If it is how do I stop it. Im sure many people have blocked off the egr with no problems. Unless it is a coincidence the engine management light and vsc came up?

I will get the code soon when i get the reading kit

Regards

On my Auris engine got into same limp mode (with "Check Engine" and "VSC" errors) when EGR got blocked due to carbon buildup - I've disconnected the Battery, cleaned the EGR valve, reconnected the Battery and everything works fine since, so in your case - try to disconnect the Battery for 15 minutes - this should reset the fault codes. AFAIK, to blank the EGR you may need to reprogram the ECU - there are mentions about this on the forum.

Ill try that. I reset the ECU too by pulling out fuse 17 and 20 i think.  Someone said that if i reset the ecu the car may not drive properly for a day or 2 so maybe this could be it?

I drove the car home after work and it was fine but lights etc still came on. Im gonna see how it goes

Blanked off egr and reset ECU/ Engine kept going into limp home mode so I filled tank back up and un blanked the egr. I got 33mpg ffs nothing seems to be working to improve mpg

Hi you seem to be getting low mpg if your also doing motorway driving.

I would firstly clean the EGR not blank it there are instructions on this forum how to do it and it very easy to do.

Secondly what fuel are using I only use Shell in mine used v power for a year but now use regular Shell.

When was the car last serviced and are the parts genuine and was the fuel filter changed as I've attached an image of what I have got on a motorway run just recently to and from various speed and the average was 42mpg shells basic diesel fuel

Hi use BP ultimate diesel and every day I do 5 minutes country roar, 10 minute motorway and 10 minute city driving every day. The car has been serviced when I bought it but non genuine parts were used, but good ones. The fuel filter was changed but the oil filter has not been changed yet as I need a stupid tool! The oil has been changed and 5w was used

I am going to clean the egr when I change the fuel filter.

As for the dash display im getting 27mpg per the cpu! Its completely wrong, I do manual calculations based on the miles it says I have done and fuel usage (full tank to empty)

It has been cold in the UK since I bought the car so Im hoping its that

Completed the next calculation and I have done 35.19 mpg, still  rubbish. my cars computer says 27.7mpg and was reset when i topped up the tank, my mind boggles to how the trip computer is way out, 1 or 2 mpg yes but not 8!
