Well after changing gearbox oil still got a crunch dropping down from 3rd to 2nd gear only, going up all gears absolutely smooth just that one gear, surely if it was a synchro in the box it would be crunching going up into 2nd? Is there anything else I can check maybe adjusting the rod inside the footwell? Or bleeding clutch?

any help appreciated as it's putting me off driving the thing to cause any further damage.

Just looking on the web, seems a crunch on just one downshift is the first sign of a syncro going  - as this similar q & a post details

If the clutch needed bleeding would expect a lot more difficulties, though worth doing for peace of mind.

Never read about anyone adjusting the gear rods /  cables etc but again you could lubricate under the gear lever cover and the linkages/cables at the gearbox end.

"  From the description it sounds like you'd got a damaged syncro, especially if this happens when you're shifting down into 3rd. Up shouldn't make quite that bad a noise but if the syncro is really on the way out (which your description suggests it is, given that it's been getting worse over time) you'll get the noise on upshifts, too.

Pretty much the only way to fix it is to pull the gearbox and either replace it with an overhauled one or strip it and replace the syncros. You can also hope that you haven't damaged/worn any gears themselves, that'll make the repair even more expensive. As you can probably guess already, that's not going to be a cheap repair.

In the meantime I would suggest that you double declutch and rev match on downshifts (ie clutch -> box into neutral -> blip throttle -> clutch and move into lower gear) and use slower upshifts to extend the life of the gearbox until you can get it fixed. There's no point in trying to change gears as fast as possible (even on a race track, the gain is minimal) but it's very hard on the box. "

interesting thanks,so before I book it in with my mechanic last call of action is il try bleed clutch tonight, now I can only see one reservoir bottle on top left of bulkhead is this same Brake and clutch fluid which goes in that same reservoir? Dot3 dot4? Tried looking online getting mixed reviews.

thanks.

Its  a dual resevoir with the clutch on the offiside, but its compartment only becomes clear once the fluid level drops by a good few mm.

I use dot4, seems the most common, though whats in it now ?

They say you should not mix fluid types, more so dot3 into existing dot4 ,  so you might have to do a full change of both clutch and brakes.

Well its abit hard because only brought the motor about month ago so no idear what fluids it's been using,I'm guessing dot4 been used, but most probably do brakes and clutch together just to be safe,I'm contemplating about using redline mt90 fluid in gearbox as that removed a crunch on my other vehicle, but for reference the oil I used for this gearbox was comma 75w90 semi gl5

Thanks again.

Hi,

Can you say where you had it done and how much its likely to cost, assume you had the clutch replaced at the same time?

Hmm. well I'm also in Yorkshire these days, hence me asking who locally  did the repair for you. SJs at  Birmingham a bit too far to go.

Had previously  used a so called "clutch and gearbox " specialist in West yorkshire but they made a total botch.
