Hi guys I'm new on here I've just bought a t180 avensis estate 2006. It's my first diesel. I've recently noticed a whining noise when I rev the car. Any ideas what it could be? For all I know it could be normal. There's no loss in power the car pulls really well in every gear il try upload a video when I can

Hi Nigel, welcome to the forum

Perhaps turbo but as you say it could just be normal turbo noise?

You probably want to read up on the head/headgasket issues that can affect a small % of AD series engines just to be aware. In fact for a diesel virgin the whole thread is worth a read.

Hi thanks for reply it might be the turbo. Right the reason I don't think it's normal is a few days ago I found the big pipe that comes from the airfilter box to the turbo disconnected and the clip was broken (where it was disconnected was the turbo side not the airfilter side so the car I'm guessing was sucking in a lot more air than it should) I replaced this clip with a jubilee clip and since then that whistle noise started. I'm taking it to garage this morning and il hear they're opinion.

the turbo only really starts to kick in from ~ 1800rpm.

You don't have to use injector cleaners. However, depending upon your typical journey (short journeys where the engine never fully warms up & where the DPF never gets to regenerate)  it may be worthwhile using premium diesel (like Shell V-power) or additives to help keep it clean.

In fact, if you don't know the history of the car it may be worth running something  like Archoil 6400-D through it.
