Vibration at 2000rpm - again and again

Recommended Posts

Bang on Moo, as you say if your going to spend unending hours pulling the gearbox then only fit a disc, you can bet your boots the trouble was coming from the cover or release bearing. Do it all again ? NAAAA.

£785 was for parts & labour, and includes VAT - total cost, in other words.

Yes, this was the price I was quoted by Toyota Knaresborough in October '21 but 'haggled' it down a bit to £720.

They are a really good garage and I can't say that of any other over a lifetime os dealing with dealerships!

Hi Chris, the way things have gone with the UK economy and all the other associated price hikes I suppose the cost today will be £1000 if not more.

Good job you were able in 2021 to go ahead with the work, you probably saved a good bit.

Stay safe Chris.......All the best Macy.

Doesn't seem that any one has came back with a definitive answer to the question about the vibration at 2000 rpm 🤷‍♂️, I've just bought a 2011 IQ and it has this vibration, and what I've noticed is that the gear shift tells you to go into a higher gear when the vibration starts, and this is up hill, so if anything I would want to come down a gear not got up into a higher one, not up hill, as its already struggling. I've also felt a very slight vibration on the gear leaver (if you hold it constantly whilst changing, at the point you would normally put your hand back on the wheel) but not all the time and same again on the clutch pedal. Any one got a clue 🤔

Forget what I've just posted an hour ago I had only read the 1st page (newbie) didn't realise there were another 9 pages. So it is defo the clutch 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I generally ignore the gear shift 'green arrow'.

It seems of no great use!

Yes, nine pages. There's been a lot of chat about this.

Certainly was the clutch in my case. I had the Toyota garage do mine because I've delt with them with previous cars and they are remarkably good. However, there are companies the specialise in clutches. Unfortunately, replacing the clutch on an IQ is very labour intensive.

I agree. It does seem often to suggest to move to a higher gear when that may offer marginally lower fuel consumption, but the engine would sound to be in 'unhappy' too low revs.

I have had the vibration at ~1800-2000 rpm in every gear issue for around 2-3 years. Prior to that no issue and have owned our 1.0 manual iQ2 since new at March 2009. Currently ~40k miles. Like others have commented before it's present when driving (ie vehicle under load), but not present at all when revving the engine in neutral (whether stationary or moving at speed).

Having read through all of this thread (and a few others) I decided to just get the clutch replaced. Cost ~£740 at a local (Guildford) specialist. The old cluth was about 50% worm, but had no signs of uneven wear and the 4 springs were all intact and still firm in the springy-ness.

Unfortunately the clutch replacement has not taken the vibration away. In fact it's slightly worse - maybe due to the new clutch having more mass so there's more weight to vibrate about, whatever's causing it.

I'm keen to keep trying things to sort it, and am willing to spend the money doing so. I don't have the experience or time to do things myself, so currently looking for a local mechanic of garage to help work through things (not easy in these parts).

From reading this and other threads, sounds like I should be looking at:

- ERG stuff (the 'hole' in the manifold and replacement of the whole things, possibly with the update version - ours is an early car).

- driveshaft

- replacement engine and gearbox - there appears to be some low mileage engines available for not too much, so I'm guessing an experienced mechanical could check them out, (ie refurb) and swap in. I've even wondered if this would be cheaper and quicker than trying to debug out current engine given the cost of people's time.

Any other things to add to the list above?

Really sorry other that the clutch replacement didn't cure the vibration problem. I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer advice, so I won't (!) and leave that to others.

I am in Guildford, I have been chasing this issue and given up. My local mechanic would have done my clutch for £500 but I cancelled it as I suspect the clutch is not the cause, and I don't want to waste money. It is a rabbit hole that may have no end, and may just be a characteristic of a 3 cylinder engine. Engine mounts have also been mentioned, I get a slight wobble when driving which is another issue I am trying to resolve. I have 47k on the clock on a 61 plate.

If you are talking about the vibration at 2000 rpm, most noticeable under load, then I can say changing the clutch solved it for me and many others. This is not a guarantee though! Try this. Find a steepish hill. Drive up it in a gear so that the car is under load and at that vibration point. Keep it there. Now slowly depress the clutch. Do you feel the vibration arrive on your foot and does it disappear just as the clutch slips? This is what made be concluded that it must be clutch related. Now it's up to you! Good luck.

Causes other than the clutch could be wheels not balanced or engine mounts failing

Although the clutch did not fix it, I'm happy to have done it. The car was 40k miles and the old clutch that came out showed around 50% wear, so the new one should be good to around 120k miles which is probably more than we'll even do in it. I went through this entire thread and a few similar others and clutch replacement has >20 confirmed outcomes for this issue.

I don't accept that it's a 'characteristic'. We've had the car since new following ordering it after seeing it at the 2008 British Motor Show. The vibration was not there when new in 2009 and only started appearing maybe ~5 years ago, slowing getting more pronounced.

I had our engine mounts properly checked, they are absolutely fine.

Wheels are also fine having recently had 4x tyres all round ad a balance when at that point. Anyway, wheels would not cause a vibration related to revs, it would be road speed / load related.

In the early days of this thread there was a lot of talk about the EGR sensor, and on another thread about some hole that blocks up to feed gas through to this - has anyone got experience of looking at these? I saw mention somewhere that this sensor changed in mid 2009 implying Toyota had an issue with the earlier ones.
