Hi Guys,

I know this topic has been covered before but I couldn't find a definite answer anywhere.

Im looking to buy a petrol 1.8 avensis and I know that these engines have trouble with high oil consumption.

I've read on some places that this problem was fixed with the introduction of the MK2 model and other people mentioned it wasn't fixed until 2008?

Can someone please let me know what year these engines high oil consumptions was fixed so I know which age to buy :)

Also any other major problems I should know about on the avensis MK2?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum :smile:Iirc it was mid-2005 (July >) but if in doubt buy a T25 facelift (or a T27) & you should be safe.

Thanks for the fast reply Heid :)

How do I know if it's a T25? Sorry if that's a daft question!

According to the Honest John review, the oil consumption issue should have been fixed in cars built from July 2005. The facelift was launched in July 2006. The T25 ran from 2003 to 2009, and was replaced by the T27 (2009-2015).

Thank you Frosty :)

Rob, you search the forum and you will hard/y find a face-lift owner with an oil burning issue. My friend had one for a period (2008 model year), and his car hardly used a drop during his ownership - until it was written off in a collision. Also not every 1ZZ engine had the oil burning issue!

I can also state that a T25 face-lift will be better, as most of the issues were ironed out, plus the specs were improved. Look for a TR spec which has a lot of extras (combination of the T3-S and T3-X). The only thing missing (and cannot be retro fitted) is cruise control. I have experienced the T25 and nearly bought one, before I spotted my T27.

Oh yes, it has a handbrake you can pull!

Thank you Konrad.

I will definitely get the face lift model then :)

Not sure my budget will reach to a TR spec- I'm only looking to spend around 2.5k.

Can anyone suggest a good buyers guide?

The TR spec below the T4 and T-Spirit(not available with 1.8) specs, and should have more available. For secondhand the specs won't affect the price as much as condition. I would avoid the T2 spec as it is too basic, unless it is mint. The T3-S is the basically a T2 with the sat-nav. T3-X would be my minimum spec.

I am also well known for suggesting that the best value spec. of that era is TR (I had a 2007 TR). The main omissions from higher trims are/were electric leather seats (the diesel TRs had cruise control).
