Advice On Noise

Hi all.. :help:

since ownering my corolla si e10 since january this year I have been very pleased with it overall apart from a few areas that annoy me

1. Changing into 2nd gear without jerking the car seems to be art form all in itself apart from that the gearbox seems ok but it can be very jerky changing into 2nd unless your doing the change very quickly.

2. The clutch has a slight vibration coming through it, but once fully depressed is not noticable and seems to dissapear, dealer says it's just the vibrations from the engine coming through the pedal, however I'm not convinced and know my cars well and I think personally the clutch could be on it's way out.

Also has started to squeak and is driving me mad when parking up as I can hear it more then, when depressing the clutch the squeaking is actually coming from the clutch itself in the engine bay after a friend helped me out finding it

3. Now and again changing mainly into 2nd gear, can't say I've noticed it in other gears I can hear an angresive clunking / loud banging coming under the car around the engine, almost feels like the clutch is slipping but it doesn't actually appear so. This can happen once in a day and not happen for several weeks after which makes it very difficult to get a dealer to check!

Sorry If I seem somewhat vague on my descriptions, but It's always difficult to describe noises to people. The clutch and gearbox are originals coming up to 60,000 which will be the cam belt change very soon too.

thanks any help on the issues

Kev :)

Every problem with our cars are the same throughout methinks!

I've got the squeeky clutch (towards the passengers side of the engine bay?), used to be more noticeable when I sat in it without the engine started. But I can't hear it when i'm driving (maybe because of my music)... But as my cars gone for repairs the bloke has said to me that it needs a new clutch. (even though it felt fine :( ). Might be worth checking out :)

Can't say I have any problems when I change into 2nd

Just a few ideas which may help...

Had same problem with mine, especially in the winter.

I squirted small amounts of WD40 down the fork which goes from the

the clutch to the hydraulic piston. This probably will reduce the life of

the clutch if any oil gets on the plate. But I think that the problem maybe

rust /light corrosion on / around thrust bearing. After pressing clutch pedal up and down several times with engine off, the squeak became quieter and after several weeks, it went away.

Probably the proper thing to do is to dismantle the clutch, in which case

you might as well replace it, if it doesn't have long to go.

Gearbox: Have you tried treating with Slick or someother suitable anti-friction additive. I treated mine (it is easy to remove some gearbox oil in Corollas, the

plug is at the front on 92 - 97 models) which made the gears a bit smoother (also

tiny increase in power). Also make sure cables from Gearstick to gearbox are

well oiled, you should be able to get to them by lifting gearstick flexible surround.
