Carina E Gti Revs

I have recently got a 1995 carina E Gti, and am very pleased with it. However, when I push down hard on the accelerater the engine seems to jump to 4000 revs, then drop back to 3000 revs and accelerate. is this normal? It feels like the car is revving but not going as quick as it should, I'm sure the acceleration should be smooth through all the range, or is this just how the carina is? Other than this the car has no apparent problems.

Please help!

I'm not sure, but it sounds like the clutch is slipping. :( Will the car pull away ok in third gear without much trouble trying not to stall it? This could be your prob...

yeah think you're right. tried to accelerate this morning & could smell burning! got a quote for new clutch £90 + fitting.

do you think it's worth getting a performance clutch? or should I stick with a toyota one. I'd be intersted to hear what difference a performance clutch makes. I've seen some for £200.

I suppose it depends on how you treat the clutch really. I should imagine the standard one should be up to normal GTI use. But don't forget we're talking Toyota GTI here and not boy racer style GTI !
