Battery Charging in situ.

Hi. I would much appreciate any comment's on the following topic..

I would like to be able to connect my charger 'Without' having to first disconnect my Battery ? I have a charger that goe's into 'trickle-mode' once the Battery is at a suitable charge level.

.This is because of a parasitic-drain, If i was able to keep the Battery topped up in trickle mode, 'without disconnecting' It would be helpful for me.

Any help appreciated....Vic-J..

i would do it there is no problems especially with trickle charging in situ    my dad does it on his 2004 yaris in the garage, i use my cars too much to need doing it and my car is outside but the space under the bonnet of my 66 yaris i could easily fit the charger under the bonet

Trickle chargers are available for motorbikes etc where a cable is permanently attatched to the Battery, with the cable ending in a small plug somewhere accessible.  To charge you simply plug the cable end into the corresponding cable on the charger and switch it on.  No reason you couldn't fit one to a car.

Halfords sell an intelligent charger which detects Battery polarity and will not work if you connect the cables incorrectly

So even I can charge a Battery in situ without hassle - and have done so for decades.

Thank's for your comment's. My main concern as alway's been the chance that charging with Battery still connected to car In Situ, could have any adverse affect on the car electronic's...Regard's Vic.

No, it won't have any adverse effects, assuming your charger won't overcharge and that it's connected properly.

Remember to set to the lowest charging current (initial charge) wen charging in-situ to avoid large voltage spikes damaging the electronics. I use a Ctek plug and charger and works fine for the last few years.

Thank's for your comment's. I currently use  a Lidl Charger that is rated at 4-Amps then reverting to 0.5 amps Trickle charge, once the charger think's the Battery is o-k to revert to trickle-charge..

Iv'e been looking at a Mapole trickle only charger, this may be a better option because it wouldn't go above 0.5 amps... Regards   Vic..
