I had a problem with my avensis gear box. It suddenly shift back from fifth gear to neutral when driving. You have to hold the stick in position to keep it going. Replaced the gear box with a second hand one the a same thing happened. Any idea

Strange with two 'boxes. Unless there'e a problem with them generally and you've been unlucky! Check all mountings. Have a look at all the forums. Someone will know. Regards.

Remove the Rubber gater from the gear lever it sounds like it's pressing between the lever and the cut out in the floor pan then Drive it without the boot see what happens.
