Hi,

New here, I am wondering if anyone had any issues regarding power steering? driving yesterday and the power steering went, got really heavy.. called breakdown assistance out and the guy said it was electrical.. left the engine off a few minutes and when started it came back again but then lost it and came back over and over.. its been taken to our local toyota dealer but its not been bought from a dealership so no warranty, worried its going to cost a lot of money I do not have.. any suggestions would be really appreciated ?

The electrically assisted power system relies on a nice healthy flow of amps from the alternator/battery.

I would start looking at these areas. If your Battery is the 2007 original, then it's probably well past its best.

Next, get the alternator tested to see if it's supplying the amps and voltage it's supposed to. Most back street garages can do this at minimal cost, if not for free.

Hi Neiler, without knowing the exact model of your vehicle nobody will be able to help you. In summarising that it has an electric rack so must be quite modern. Please post the exact vehicle, year and trim level.

Hi,

my wife has just purchased an 07 plate Auris 1.6TR. Whilst going through the history I noticed a mention on loss of pas. the fault was found to be the pas ecu, this was replaced and car tested and found to have cured the problem. Hope this helps :)

I am too having this same problem. I have a 2007 Toyota auris 1.6 vvti.

Was driving in the morning fine to a location and parked up fine. Upon return to the car and starting the engine, I get a warning on the dash saying 'check power steering' and the P/S light ignited. The steering wheel also went heavy meaning the power steering was not active. Since then I've had it checked by a mechanic who had checked all fuses and relays and had not found a problem with them. Have also disconnected and reconnected the Battery in hopes to reset the ECU but that's not worked either.

If any one else has had this same problem please get back to me with what you think is the most likely problem as I definitely do not want a Toyota dealership charging me up to £1000 on a repair for a 10 year old car.
