Toyota Hose Clamps

I've noticed that Toyota coolant hose clamps (sometimes known as spring band clamps) come supplied seemingly locked in an expanded position - the tabs that you would grip with a special set of pliers to squeeze to open the clamp seem hooked together.

Does anyone have experience in removing / setting these clamps? I already have a set of pliers for spring band clamps, but do I need a special set for these types of clamp? If so, could someone send me a link to them?

As usual I looked into this topic. I have the hoseclip clamp tool, as I was going to help a friend change something on his Prius.

As you can see, it has a locking mechanism to make it easy to move the hose clamp in awkward locations.

Got it from eBay for £10.

I took some photos of the hose clips and notice there is an extra tab, so the clip can be locked in an open position -

The close-up of the left clip shows the tab to hold the hose clip open.

I hope this gives a clear idea on the hose clips.

I've always used locking pliers (mole grips) for these clips.  In the 'closed' position the clip can always be slid along the hose to enable dismantling.

Thanks guys, especially Konrad C. Although I already have a set of pliers, I wasn't sure which would be the right type for the job - it seems to be the cable extension with that fitting that's needed.

What I'm having difficulty understanding is how these clamps work - normally, the idea is to pince the table together to open up the clamp against the sprung pressure; the releasing it mid tension onto the hose.

With these, is it the intention to push that side 'locking' tab sideways to open and close the clamp, hence the fitting on the tool in the picture? I just don't get how they work.

Might just end up asking the dealer to do it when it's serviced - presumably they have the right tool.

The hose clip pliers are designed for general hose clips that don't have the locking hook/tab, like the ones on recent Toyotas. The cable extension is design for hard access where you cannot use pliers to open and still move the clip. This is again is for non-Toyota clips without the hook/tab. Normal pliers should be fine on the Toyota hose clips. Just squeeze and hook the clip, then move wherever needed. Probably easier than the older clamps/clips, especially in awkward places.

The new clamps I have seem to be in a locked position, which suggests that they come tensioned in an 'open' position. Presumably, the idea is to just slide them onto the hose without using pliers, but then when in position, somehow push the locking lug sideways using a tool so that the clamp snaps shut?

The band clamp pliers you linked to are fine. They even have the spring version too.
