The whinning noise is not as bad when the car is warm. There's no smoke or loss of power just that loud whinning noise every time I accelarate

Unfortunately it sounds like you're turbo might be on the way out. I had the exact same noise from my avensis and within a week it failed

Yep I thought so and Ive dreaded that opinion.  It's been like that for two months now. I can't afford new turbo at the minute so I'm hoping it will last a few more months while I save up

I got one from a breaker's yard for 150 euro and it was perfect . Or you can get it reckoned for 300 might be less . It's a nightmare when they go

Thank you for the replies. Did you get any other signs before your turbo went?

If the turbo is failing I strongly recommend you investigate swapping just the chra (the bit that spins) rather than the whole turbo. You won't need to disconnect the exhaust manifold and no access need to the underside. New chra available on flea bay for about 200 notes.I did mine myself in about 2 hours.

Is the chra easy to replace? When the car is warm the whine is completely none existent! It's been like it for months now while I'm saving for new turbo but if there's anything I can replace which is cheaper! I appreciate the advice

  • 4 weeks later...

After taking the car to Toyota garage I got quoted £1600 for new turbo fitted. That's a bit steep for me but since then I've driven the car every day to work and last weekend I went down south Kent area a 4 hour journey from where I am and the car drove really well checked the oil and it was fine. Again no smoke or loss of power. So I'm really tempted to just leave it.

yesterday how ever I decided to open the intake side of the turbo to see if I can see any obvious damage and this is what I saw....

The blades are damaged as you can see I suspect something went in there and caused this and I'm sure the seal from the air filter because a few months ago I found the intake pipe loose and the turbo whining noise started doing it since. So now I'm thinking of tempting to change the crha myself. So "Duggerz" you said you changed yours yourself how hard was it to change your crha any tips or advice before I start? And was your blades damaged as much as mine? The small turbine on mine spins freely and has no play at all (doesn't move up or down)  any advice I really appreciate

I don't consider it was very hard, but I did have to flex the oil return pipe slightly to allow the actual chra to be removed. Mine is the 2 litre rather than 2.2 but I imagine the units to be similar. I suggest you review the job and see how you would remove it. The band clamp that joins the two halves had to be removed then you remove the oil feed and slacken the return (you need to get right under the turbo) then you just pull off the inlet side with the chra and replace. I was quoted a fortune for removing the whole turbo but this way it only took me 2 hours.

The compressor housing has been scorched by the blades, would this not affect the efficiency of the turbo?

I was on mobile before and couldn't see the pic very well, but now I can. Changing the CHRA will help with the howl but with the housing being scored you'll still have some. Looks like the main problem with efficiency is because parts of the turbo blades are now missing. In this case the only way to be sure that you'll completely cure the issue is unfortunately to replace the whole turbo. As mentioned earlier perhaps you can source a used unit. I don't envy you getting the old one off though, those exhaust manifold studs are only accessible from under the car, and will probably need preheating with a gas axe.

I don't know if the efficiency is affected as the car as I say is driving well and has been doing so for months since the howling started. The howling sound is only there when it's cold in the mornings. After driving a couple of miles the whine completely goes. I'm really tempted to just leave it.
